Job Summary

This position will be responsible for consumer product testing and validation for Spectrum Brands’ Hardware and Home Improvement Division. The Mechanical Technician will conduct R&D Testing for new product introduction, provide detailed data records/reporting and develop new testing methods/process/equipment.  This individual will work closely with Technicians, Test Engineers and Product Development Teams to ensure successful qualification of consumer products for our large portfolio of brands (Kwikset, Baldwin, Weiser, Pfister, National Hardware, FANAL and EZSET).

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • (65%) Provide hands-on testing for Residential Security Hardware, Plumbing, Commercial Hardware and Packaging of consumer products
  • (10%) Provide accurate documentation, record and archive measurement data pertaining to product parameters and process control performance
  • (10%) Manage preventative maintenance (PM) and equipment calibration schedules. Troubleshoot and repair complex test fixtures
  • (10%) Design and construct testing equipment used to analyze life-of-product, reliability and functionality
  • (5%) Participate in the investigation of consumer complaints to include the analysis of consumer complaint samples, investigating the root cause of the issue and cooperating with Regulatory, Quality Assurance and Production in corrective actions

Education and Experience Profile

  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent. 


Required Skills

  • 5+ years of experience as a Technician in a R&D laboratory, Quality Assurance or similar setting
  • Very strong mechanical aptitude combined with hands-on test experience working with mechanical test benches and / or hydrology flow benches
  • Experience performing laboratory test equipment maintenance, including (but not relegated to) servicing and troubleshooting: motors, pneumatic cylinders, environmental chambers and life-cycle fixtures
  • Ability to learn and understand industry standards (ANSI/BHMA, UL, EN, IAPMO and ISTA) standards Great oral and written communication skills
  • Conducts scheduled projects in a safe and timely manner with little to no direct supervision
  • Ability to utilize basic machine shop equipment (band saws, drill presses, etc.) for test preparation, station repair and quick-turn fabrication is a plus
  • Ability to maintain a clean and safe working environment

Working conditions are typical for R&D laboratory and office environments.
