The Health Information Management Services (HIMS) department is responsible for coordinating and performing clerical and administrative functions involving confidential health information in accordance with specified regulatory agency requirements, federal and state laws.

What does a Health Information Management Specialist at Sonora Quest Laboratories do?
1. Processes routine and complex release of health information from patients and third-parties including legal requests and subpoenas, in accordance with company policy and all state and federal laws.
2. Assists with the administrative management of our online patient portal including assistance to patients in need of technical assistance during portal registration.
3. Supports and maintains the integrity of the Master Patient Index (MPI) by monitoring, researching and problem solving in order to improve the accuracy and integrity of the database. 
4. Provides customer service and assistance related to HIMS departmental functions to patients, vendors, physicians, and other departments over the telephone, through email, by traditional mail or other means.

Who you are NOT:
• You are uncomfortable with having to make quick decisions.
• You are unable to multi-task in a fast paced environment.
• You do not like talking on the phone. Having calls in queue is not something you enjoy.
• You have a hard time giving computer technical instructions including troubleshooting system errors.
• You do not like a busy, fast pace work environment.
• You are easily overwhelmed.
• You are not comfortable working on tasks that have set timelines.

Must haves:
• High School Diploma/GED with knowledge of health information practices and principles by completion of one or more years’ of post-high school education in medical records and information systems OR one or more years’ of experience working with medical records and/or health information management.
• Ability to communicate effectively through reading, writing and speaking in person or on the phone including complex technical and legal concepts to non-technical persons.
• Ability to work in a team environment demonstrating good judgement, initiative and problem solving skills.
• Ability to rely on resources to make decisions based on policy, procedure and regulatory requirements.
• Strong organizational and interpersonal skills with a focus on providing customer service.
