The Role

My client, a very well regarded residential civil engineering company, are seeking an experienced Health & Safety Manager to lead and support health, safety and environmental standards across our construction operations, based in the East Midlands.

Senior Health and Safety Advisor candidates, ready to progress into management, will also be considered.

Working closely with senior management, Contracts Managers and site teams, you will provide competent H&S advice, oversee compliance, support project mobilisation and drive a proactive safety culture across the business.

This is a hands-on role for a practical H&S professional who is confident working across multiple construction sites and engaging with people at all levels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the day-to-day management of health and safety across construction operations.
  • Provide competent H&S advice to directors, managers, supervisors and site teams.
  • Conduct planned and unplanned site inspections, audits and compliance reviews.
  • Prepare, review and approve RAMS and Construction Phase Plans.
  • Support the H&S requirements of new projects, from mobilisation through to completion.
  • Monitor compliance with legislation, company procedures, client requirements and the Integrated Management System.
  • Investigate accidents, incidents and near misses, including supporting RIDDOR assessments where required.
  • Analyse H&S performance data, identify trends and recommend preventative actions.
  • Develop and deliver toolbox talks, briefings and safety initiatives.
  • Monitor plant, equipment, temporary works, excavations, traffic management, COSHH, PPE and other critical site controls.
  • Support environmental, occupational health and sustainability requirements.
  • Work with the Training function to identify competency and training requirements.
  • Support external audits, client reviews and maintenance of company accreditations.
  • Produce clear H&S reports and provide regular updates to senior management.
  • Lead by example and continually promote a positive, proactive safety culture.

About You

The successful candidate will have:

  • NEBOSH National General Certificate or equivalent.
  • A recognised construction-related health & safety qualification.
  • IOSH membership or equivalent professional membership.
  • Proven H&S experience within construction, civil engineering or groundworks.
  • Strong knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015 and UK H&S legislation.
  • Experience conducting site audits and inspections.
  • Strong experience preparing and reviewing RAMS.
  • Experience investigating accidents and incidents.
  • Good understanding of construction plant, groundworks and site operations.
  • Excellent communication, organisational and report-writing skills.
  • Confidence to challenge unsafe practices and influence positive change.
  • A practical, proactive and solutions-focused approach.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and competing priorities.
  • A full UK driving licence.

 

Desirable: NEBOSH Construction, NVQ Level 6 Occupational Health & Safety, GradIOSH/CMIOSH, Temporary Works, First Aid, Asbestos Awareness or relevant environmental qualifications.
