Chief Geologist (05/03/2025) Namibia

We are looking for a Chief Geologist for one of our clients with the following details:

Localization: TREKKOPJE site, Namibia

Contract Duration: 5 months (May – Sep) – with a flexibility according to campaign progress

Work conditions: 10h day shift work (7days/7 24h/24)

Qualification and Experience Required:

  • Driver license
  • Language: Fluent in English written and spoken

Experience

  • Three (3) years’ experience in an area or areas relevant to open pit mining, in geological roles, with previous experience in drilling or exploration projects.
  • Demonstrated experience managing teams and coordinating field operations.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related field.
  • Advanced degrees or certifications in Petroleum Geology, Mineral Exploration, or related specialisations are an asset.

Skills:

  • Strong analytical and interpretation skills for geological data.
  • Proficiency in geological logging, sample analysis, and software tools (Leapfrog, oasis montage…).
  • Excellent leadership, organisational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet tight deadlines in a field-based environment.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to work in remote locations and challenging environmental conditions.
  • Capable of handling and processing core samples and conducting fieldwork.

Key Responsibilities

  • This position will be required to adhere to all relevant requirements, policies, procedures and legal regulations pertaining to health, safety, environment and quality, as well as finance, human resources, and any other regulations as required by the company and relevant to the level of the role and responsibilities of the function.

Geological interpretation and monitoring:

  • Supervise drilling activity, which include random site visits.
  • Provide on-site geological expertise to monitor drilling operations and ensure accurate sample recovery.
  • Interpret drill cuttings or core samples, and other geological data to identify lithological units, formations, and anomalies (rock type, alteration, structure).
  • Correlate on-site observations with historical geological data to guide drilling activities.
  • Communicate geological findings and recommendations to the Project Manager and drilling team.
  • Drawing up schedules and plans of the drilling programmes.
  • Operating a handheld XRF.

Team leadership and coordination

  • Supervise and manage a team of two Geological Technicians responsible for sample collection and preparation.
  • Delegate tasks, provide guidance, and ensure adherence to established procedures.
  • Train and mentor team members on best practices for sample handling, labelling, and preparation.
  • Monitor team performance and address any operational challenges.

Sample collection and preparation

  • Ensure that samples are packaged properly and dispatched timeously and according to procedure.
  • Oversee the collection, labelling, and documentation of core samples and drill cuttings.
  • Ensure that sample processing is in accordance with international sampling standards and protocols. (Insertion of reference material, blank, duplicates).

Data management and reporting

  • Maintain detailed records of geological observations, sample collection, and drilling progress in a database to company standards.
  • Prepare daily, weekly, and final geological reports summarising findings and recommendations.
  • Complete the logging sheets and entering the data on computer and into consistent geologic cross sections and level plans.
  • Work with the data management team to ensure accurate and timely data entry into the project database.

Safety and Compliance

  • Ensure that all team activities comply with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Conduct regular safety briefings for team members and monitor adherence to safety protocols.
  • Report any incidents, hazards, or non-compliance issues to the Project Manager.
  • Correct collection of data: Enforce, adhere and Interpret Quality Control. Ensure the currency of database information, drilling data, assay results if data available. Thoroughness and attention to details
  • Apply and enforce HSE policies on site - Identify and report potential safety risk

Collaboration and Communication

  • Act as a key liaison between the drilling team, laboratory personnel, and the Project Manager.
  • Provide leadership, support, technical guidance and performance feedback to all team members
  • Provide timely updates on geological progress, potential risks, and recommended adjustments.
  • Collaborate with other stakeholders to optimise drilling performance and achieve project objectives.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
