The Job Role

A Crane Operator is responsible for safely lifting, moving, and positioning steel products within a port or industrial environment. The role involves operating overhead gantry cranes and coordinating closely with ground teams to ensure accurate and efficient handling of heavy loads. Strong safety awareness, clear communication, and the ability to work calmly under pressure are essential.

 

  • Operate overhead and gantry cranes to lift, move, and position steel and heavy materials safely
  • Carry out pre‑use checks on cranes and lifting equipment
  • Follow lifting plans, load limits, and safety procedures at all times
  • Communicate clearly with slingers, signallers, and ground teams
  • Accurately position loads to prevent damage or risk to personnel
  • Monitor loads during lifting to ensure stability and control
  • Report defects, faults, or unsafe conditions immediately
  • Maintain a clean, safe working area
  • Work to operational deadlines while maintaining high safety standards
  • Comply with all health, safety, and site regulations

 

What do you need to be a successful Crane Operator

  • Overhead crane operator training/certification
  • (e.g. RTITB, NPORS, CPCS, or employer‑approved in‑house training)
  • Understanding of safe lifting operations, load limits, and crane controls
  • Good hand–eye coordination and spatial awareness
  • Strong focus and attention to detail when handling suspended loads
  • Ability to follow instructions and lifting plans accurately
  • Clear communication skills, especially when working with slingers or signallers
  • Good safety awareness and willingness to stop work if conditions are unsafe
  • Experience in a industrial, steel, warehouse environment
