Project Engineer (Facilities Projects) – 6 Month Contract (Possible Extension / Permanent)

Location: Southampton

Contract: Temporary – 6 months (with potential extension or permanent opportunity)

Hours: Day shift (site-based)

Salary/Rate: Negotiable (dependent on experience)

 

Overview

Our client is seeking an experienced Project Engineer to support the delivery of multiple facilities and utilities projects across the site. The role will manage end-to-end project activity across a portfolio that includes HVAC, chilled water systems and compressor replacement/upgrade works. This is a hands on delivery role requiring strong stakeholder management, contractor control, and a focus on safe execution and high-quality handover.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage a portfolio of facilities/engineering projects from scope definition through to installation, commissioning and handover.
  • Lead delivery of projects including (but not limited to) HVAC upgrades, chilled water works and compressed air/compressor replacement.
  • Produce and manage project plans, schedules, budgets and reporting (including actions, risks and issues).
  • Define scopes of work, support procurement/tendering activities, and manage contractor performance on site.
  • Coordinate stakeholders across Facilities/Engineering, Operations/Manufacturing, EHS, Quality and external suppliers to minimise disruption and ensure effective change control.
  • Track project costs and progress against agreed milestones and escalate risks/issues early with pragmatic mitigation plans.

Required Experience / Skills

  • Proven experience delivering facilities/plant/utility projects in an operational environment (e.g., manufacturing, pharma/med-device, FMCG, high-compliance sites).
  • Strong technical understanding of one or more of: HVAC, chilled water systems, compressors / compressed air, building services/mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrable experience managing contractors and site works, including safe systems of work.
  • Ability to run multiple projects concurrently and prioritise effectively.
  • Strong communication skills with confidence engaging both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Competent in project reporting and planning tools (e.g., MS Project/Excel) and producing clear project documentation.

Desirable

  • Qualifications in Mechanical Engineering / Building Services / Facilities Engineering (HNC/HND/Degree).
  • Formal project management exposure (PRINCE2/APM or equivalent).
  • H&S qualification (IOSH/NEBOSH) and/or experience working under CDM environments.
  • Experience delivering projects in regulated or quality-led environments.
