Miwatj Health is an independent Aboriginal Community-Controlled Health Service. Established in 1992, we’re committed to securing quality health care services across the East Arnhem and enabling Yolŋu powered community health and wellbeing. Miwatj provides culturally appropriate, comprehensive primary health care to over 6,000 remote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander residents across 3 East Arnhem wards. With a Head Office in Nhulunbuy, Miwatj also manages a Corporate Office in Darwin, 7 fixed clinics across the East Arnhem region, and dedicated outreach teams who travel to 3 additional locations.

What's the role?

  • Work with the Yolngu Co-Manager to further develop a collaborative and culturally responsive co leadership model that provides for support and two- way mentorship
  • Utilize clinical and management expertise to lead and co-coordinate the clinical operations of Galiwin’ku Clinic
  • Co-Coordinate a multi-disciplinary team, programs, and strategies to deliver an appropriate and safe level of primary health care and emergency service
  • Operate the clinic and programs in a safe, efficient, and integrated way that meets all relevant legislation, guidelines, safety, and quality standards
  • Collaborates and contributes to the development of guidelines, policy, and standards for Miwatj Health to drive continuous quality improvement in primary health care practice

Is this role right for you?

  • Current registration with Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience as a registered nurse with a minimum of 2 years in a similar role
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills that build and lead a team to ensure excellent relationships internally and with external stakeholders
  • Have experience in HR processes managing conflict, performance issues and supporting the team to develop and grow in a challenging environment
  • Current manual NT driver’s license
  • Advanced life support, Remote Emergency Course (REC), Maternity Emergency Course (MEC), Pharmacotherapeutics (or willing to obtain)

What's it like living in Galiwin'ku?

Galiwin’ku is the largest community on Elcho Island, which is 150 km north-west of Nhulunbuy and 550 km north-east of Darwin. Galiwin’ku is the only town on Elcho Island, and is also the Aboriginal name for the whole island. You can get to Galiwin’ku via air charter or commerical flights with Air North. Galiwin’ku is home to the Yolngu people. Yolngu means ‘Aboriginal person’ in the languages of northern Arnhem Land. The population of Galiwin’ku and its surrounds is approximately 2,200, of which 90% are Indigenous. 40% of Galiwin’ku’s population is younger than 20 years of age.
