Principal Instrumentation Engineer

The role:

Delivering quality engineering for I&C/automation design for on & offshore facilities. You'll be able to perform engineering for different project phases from initial feasibility study, concept design, basic design to final detailed design. Prepare automation & metering philosophies, functional specifications & system/network topology for automation systems. Prepare technical scope of work & requisition package, prepare technical evaluation/recommendation report & bid clarification meetings with suppliers.

  • A capable leader who is skilled at identifying key competency requirements, matching these with resources either by existing personnel utilisation/development or in the selection and recruitment of new personnel
  • Ensuring the consistency of discipline output by the implementation of corporate procedures & tools and industry codes & standards
  • Providing a major contribution across all phases of engineering work from concept through to detail design and implementation on onshore & offshore oil and gas projects
  • In-depth knowledge of instrumentation such field devices, metering and actuated valves with at least a working knowledge of ICSS/Fire & Gas and SIL requirements

Scope of Responsibilities:         

  • Be the focal point for the instrumentation discipline in GY
  • Resolution of technical issues liaising as necessary with clients, suppliers and internal staff
  • Develop, maintain and manage the discipline manpower resource and technical capability within the Great Yarmouth operation to support ongoing and future work
  • Staff and Contractor recruitment, selection and assignment
  • Undertake both initial and ongoing competency assessments
  • Provision of technical resourcing support to the Engineering Manager to meet company goals and targets
  • Identification and development of tools, standards and software to improve working efficiencies and enhance discipline capabilities
  • Ensure that all discipline work is conducted by competent staff and subjected to robust reviews, checks and verifications to ensure technical excellence and timeliness
  • Ensure any project discipline staff located remotely work to the required level of review and checks.
  • Provide training, mentoring and assistance in the continuous professional development of staff.
  • Remain up to date with design developments, statutory regulations, codes of practice and offshore/onshore industry standards
  • Keeping the Engineering Manager informed of upcoming changes/opportunities in Instrumentation
  • Assist in the preparation of proposals for new business (and project variations) including technical scope, CTR development and manhour estimates
  • Vendor selection, performance monitoring and verification/quality review of sub-contracted discipline work
  • Capable of instrument design engineering work as necessary for onshore and offshore oil and gas platforms, Central Processing Facilities and the like as well as instrumentation/controls associated with renewable energy installations
  • Development of and responsible for department adherence to, clear and consistent working processes /methods for process performance improvement
  • Routine auditing of technical work output relative to technical input and established criteria and expectations
  • Carry out conceptual designs in support of concept selection studies
  • Assess the suitability of supplier offered equipment to meet client, functional, quality, reliability, environmental and safety requirements for new build projects and brown field modifications
  • Project specific Specification writing, Data Sheet production, requisition development, bid analysis, vendor coordination & equipment testing
  • Development of testing specifications, test procedures, acceptance criteria and performance/witness of FAT’s and SAT’s
  • Attend and contribute to HAZOP, HAZID, SIL review

Safety and Environmental Related Tasks:

Safety, Health, Environment and Quality

  •  Responsible for ensuring that all discipline activities conform to the corporate SHEQ Plan
  •  Good understanding of Major Accident Hazards and the role of Safety and Environmentally Critical Elements
  • Must understand impact of Instrument discipline work on safety cases for offshore platforms
  • Good working knowledge of functional safety management, in accordance with BS EN 61511

  • Some experience in renewables sector beneficial

Qualifications:

Extensive knowledge of typical FEED, detailed engineering & EPC workscopes associated with typical on and offshore greenfield & brownfield projects. Demonstrable experience of co-ordinating and supervising other engineers and meeting SHEQ, cost & schedule criteria.

Preferable: Chartered Engineer, degree qualified in a relevant subject with current certification to work offshore.

Preferable: Offshore working certified (BOSIET/FOET)
