Residential Advisor

Residential Advisor (1000405) Kelburn, Wellington Central, New Zealand

Job Description

Student and Campus Living – Residential Advisor (RA) at either Katharine Jermyn Hall or Willis St Halls

Katharine Jermyn Hall and Willis St Halls are looking to fill the remaining spots on their respective RA teams for 2020. This is an exciting opportunity to work in an inclusive, dynamic environment with a strong sense of community. You will have a profound impact on first year students in our community and a chance to make a valued contribution to the student experience at the University.

Residential Advisers play a key role in the daily running of our halls of residence and help to set the tone as positive role models in the lives of residents. This is a role that gives back. You will gain experience in leadership, decision making, community building, issues management, and much more. Reporting to the Deputy Head of Hall and Head of Hall, and as part of a team of Residential Advisors, your focus will be on the provision of tailored peer support for residential communities comprised of school leavers transitioning into a University learning environment, as well as returning, postgraduate, and international exchange students.

To succeed in the RA role, you will ideally have a minimum of two years tertiary study under your belt and know what it takes to build a sense of community and belonging, which both engages students and develops their social, academic, and citizenship skills. You will have experience working across cultures, including Māori and Pasifika, be committed to supporting gender diversity, and be willing to live onsite in order to participate fully in Hall life. This is a great opportunity to bond with your fellow Residential Advisors, and to be part of a wider whānau. Your maturity, ability to relate well to a wide range of people, positive attitude, and calmness under pressure, will have you widely respected. Successful applicants will be supported by senior, experienced staff, a comprehensive induction and training programme and ongoing opportunities that will develop valuable career skills and experience working with a diverse group of people.

In the words of our Directorate team ‘we need to be brave, ambitious, and people-focused to enable success and growth’. Victoria University of Wellington has a vision to be a world-leading capital city university that nurtures and supports students to become critically-informed, confident, civic-minded global citizens, making a difference in the world. The Directorate of Student and Campus Living plays its part by engaging, supporting, mentoring, and inspiring our students, providing them with a distinctively Wellington experience that is second-to-none.

Please note: You must be a current VUW student and be able to live on site.
