About the role
Hawthorn-Melbourne has been offering English language courses to international students for almost 40 years. Today, Hawthorn-Melbourne offers a broad range of courses to serve the objectives of our students. With the number of international students increasing, there are opportunities to join the team at Hawthorn. In particular, we are looking for teachers to work on our University of Melbourne Bridging Program (UMELBP) which commences in November 2023.
The UMELBP is an English language course designed to support students in their transition to the University of Melbourne. The course assesses whether these students meet English Language Requirements set by the University to enter their chosen degree program, as well as offering them guidance on academic skills and culture. Teachers on this program deliver 4 hours of face-to-face teaching a day, with additional time provided for preparation, marking and attending team meetings.
Essential skills & qualities
- EFL/ESL teaching experience in Australia or overseas
- Minimum of a first degree and formally recognized TESOL teaching qualification such as CELTA
- Can demonstrate an approach to teaching which shows evidence of constructive and culturally sensitive class management, current TESOL theory and practice in the ESL/EFL classroom and knowledge of the student profile including learning styles
- The ability to carry out administrative duties required of Hawthorn-Melbourne teaching staff to a high standard (e.g. monitoring of attendance, assessment standardisation and moderation, testing and placement, course record-keeping)
- Professionalism, which includes qualities such as teamwork, collegiality, information and resource sharing, and high standards of professional conduct
Desirable skills & qualities
- EAP / IELTS / Exam preparation teaching experience
- Postgraduate qualifications in TESOL, such as DELTA, MTESOL.
- Familiarity with online learning platforms including ZOOM and Moodle.
- Strong MS Office competencies, including Outlook and SharePoint
