Bioinformatics Software Developer

Bioinformatics Software Developer

Location:  Oxford, England

Oxford Nanopore Technologies is headquartered at the Oxford Science Park outside Oxford, UK, with satellite offices and commercial presence in many global locations across the US, APAC and Europe. Oxford Nanopore employs from multiple subject areas including nanopore science, molecular biology and applications, informatics, engineering, electronics, manufacturing and commercialisation. The management team, led by CEO Dr Gordon Sanghera, has a track record of delivering disruptive technologies to the market.

Oxford Nanopore’s sequencing platform is the only technology that offers real-time analysis (for rapid insights), in fully scalable formats from pocket to population scale, that can analyse native DNA or RNA and sequence any length of fragment to achieve short to ultra-long read lengths.

Our goal is to enable the analysis of any living thing, by anyone, anywhere. We offer real-time nanopore-based DNA/RNA sequencing technology: accessible, easy to use and fully scalable for any requirement. We are seeking a Bioinformatics Software Developer to join our Analysis Software team. The successful candidate will work closely with domain experienced scientists to validate our sequencing results, as well as identify new metrics, automate them, and contribute to our open-source software tools.

The Details ...

Working with the Manager, Model Training and Analysis, the job holder will bring valuable bioinformatics experience to the team responsible for training and validating our production neural network models. Each of these models is rigorously evaluated to demonstrate its validity and utility in a wide variety of bioinformatic contexts, from multiplexing to variant calling to whole-genome sequencing. You will help create, evaluate, implement, and maintain the automated pipelines that perform these tasks, working closely with lab scientists and other bioinformaticians to cover the many ways' nanopore sequencing can be used.
The Model Training and Analysis team is responsible for the training and validation of our production neural network models, used in a range of applications from sequencing to consensus. We are responsible for diagnosing any issues these models produce, which can cover many diverse areas of bioinformatics. In addition, we build and maintain internal and external software tools for interaction with models and sequencing output, as well as post-sequencing analysis.

What We're Looking For...

In addition to experience with bioinformatics, we will expect you to have a good grasp of computer science fundamentals, such as programming practices, data structures, and mathematics, as well as a basic understanding of algorithm development, including knowledge of computational complexity. Ideally, you will have a degree in Mathematical, Computational or Physical Sciences or equivalent experience. Because this role has a focus on collaboration and cross-group work, good interpersonal skills are also essential.

As a member of a relatively small (5 person) software development and analysis team, you’ll need to be capable of working independently, identifying areas where you need support, and making decisions on your own. This role will benefit from someone with a focus on delivery who has an appreciation for science and the scientific method.

Required Skills:

- Some knowledge of software development techniques and practices
- Development experience in Python - Practical experience of handling sequencing data with common software tools (such as samtools)

Ideally, you'll also have experience and abilities in any of the following areas:
- Familiarity with long-read sequencing
- Experience of professional software development techniques and practices
- Experience of software development on Linux
- Knowledge of statistics

This is a chance to join a late-stage startup changing the world through the democratisation of sequencing. Oxford Nanopore Technologies’ devices are small, low-cost, and provide real-time results, and this combination is already allowing our customers to do things never done before, from the tracking of Ebola outbreaks in the field in Africa to DNA sequencing on the International Space Station.

This role also offers excellent benefits including pension and share options!
