Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Technician - Instruments to join the Ferrier Research Institute team on a fixed term part-time role (20 hours per week) for two years. The role is to support the Instrument Custodians* to maintain effective and well-documented processes for management of the Institute infrastructure. The Technician is located within the Ferrier Research Institute.

*Instrument Custodians are selected staff members of the Ferrier Research Institute who are responsible for the general welfare and maintenance of individual scientific, instruments that they have been assigned.

The Ferrer Research Institute is New Zealand’s leading applied organic chemistry capability. We create intellectual property as the basis for private sector investment, especially in the area of therapies for unmet medical needs by undertaking world class science in the areas of GlycoTherapeutics, Immuno-pharmaceuticals, GlycoActives, Chiral Compounds, Synthetic Biology and renewable industrial chemicals.

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Provide technical support by overseeing and supporting the Instrument Custodians, and appropriate assistance to the Institute (for instruments that have no custodian) to ensure they are maintained, repaired or replaced.
  • Provide laboratory and administrative support to ensure effective, accurate and responsible resource management.
  • Communicate effectively across all aspects of work, including prompt communications around negative results/outcomes. 

Ō pūmanawa - About you

You will be a self-motivated, flexible and organised individual who can develop and maintain excellent working relationships with all staff in the Ferrier Research Institute. 

You will have the ability to work independently as well as part of a team, communicate within the Ferrier Research Institute and with external collaborators and clients. You will demonstrate the ability to solve problems and show lateral thinking. You will be self-motivated and have a strong attention to detail and self-management skills. This role is busy, challenging, rewarding and interesting for the individual with the right attitude and motivation. 

You will develop and maintain excellent working relationships with staff in the Ferrier Research Institute. The Technician will report day to day to a Science Team Leader. They will also work closely with: The Institute Director, Deputy Director, Institute Manager, Science Team Leaders, Institute Administrators, Schools at the University, Customers, industry organisations, and instrument vendors as required to perform effectively in the position.

Key Requirements: 

  • Minimum BSc, MSc, or equivalent in Chemistry or Biology.
  • Previous practical experience with scientific equipment. 
  • Ability to organise and document one’s work in a thorough and traceable manner. 
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Ability to work and communicate within the Ferrier Research Institute and with external collaborators and clients.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Flexible, self-motivated and high interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
