Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Postdoctoral Fellow in Mathematics on a 3 year fixed term contract. The Post-Doctoral Fellow in Mathematics is located with the School of Mathematics and Statistics, Faculty of Engineering which develops and delivers research in specialists’ areas such as mathematics, statistics and Data Science.  We also offer all levels of mathematics, statistics and data science teaching and learning 

Key Responsibilities: 

  • Collaborate with A/Prof Lisa Orloff Clark and/or Prof Astrid an Huef on topics relating to 
    • Non-Hausdorff groupoids 
    • Groupoid C*-algebras 
    • Steinberg algebras 
    • Graph algebras and their generalisations 
    • Inverse semigroups 
  • Deliver seminars and written papers on the outcomes of this research 
  • Collaborate with other groups on similar research 
  • Build an excellent personal research profile, with publications in internationally refereed journals.  
  • Undertake limited teaching of undergraduate and/or postgraduate mathematics courses as agreed with the Programme Director, ensuring that teaching is informed by research and is relevant and attractive to students.  This includes relevant course administration and assessment. 
  • Encourage and contribute to collegiality within the School and wider University.

You will thrive in this role with an analytical approach to defining scientific questions, design of scientifically testable hypotheses, broad-based and cross-disciplinary knowledge acquisition and detailed knowledge of the specific discipline.

You will need effective time management and forward planning to balance meeting deadlines and maintain a high standard of service to both students and staff. You will need the ability to remain calm under pressure and thrive working with a diverse range of stakeholders.

Key Requirements: 

  • A PhD in Mathematics
  • A developing record of scholarly research and publication, preferably with publications in international journals in topics relating to non-Hausdorff groupoids, Groupoid C*-algebras, Steinberg algebras, graph algebras and their generalisations and/or inverse semigroups 
  • A strong service orientation with a proven ability to build successful working relationships with a variety of people, both internal and external
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills

We are looking for a talented and ambitious investigator to join the research group of Prof an Huef and A/Prof Clark to work on a project funded by the Royal Society of New Zealand “Establishing a Structure Theory for C*-algebras of Non-Hausdorff Groupoids”.
