Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Public Programmes and Communications Coordinator to join Te Pātaka Toi Adam Art Gallery. This is a permanent, fulltime role. The successful candidate will assist in devising and coordinating public programmes and communications that enrich, explain, and promote the work of the Adam Art Gallery with the aims of building audiences and extending the Gallery’s impact.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Devising and coordinating the delivery of relevant, engaging, sensitive and broad-ranging public programmes that relate to exhibitions at the Adam Art Gallery and other aspects of the Gallery’s work.
  • Preparing relevant, well-written, accurate copy for all communications published by the Adam Art Gallery across digital and hard-copy platforms.
  • Providing editorial support in the preparation and delivery of the Gallery’s publications.
  • Proactively engaging with artists, curators, contributors, staff, students and audiences to establish enduring relationships, increase visibility, and build support for the Gallery and its work.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

You will be familiar with the demands, challenges, expectations, and rewards of work in the art gallery sector, with experience in developing and delivering public programmes and in-person, online and hard-copy communications.

You will be an excellent writer with experience writing for different audiences and occasions. You will have some knowledge of print design and production processes, and an understanding of the requirements of web and social media communications.

You will be a confident speaker and a warm host. You will have a genuine interest in people and a desire to build audiences, with a special sensitivity to the university environment. You will know how to connect in meaningful ways with artists, curators, scholars, critics, and the media.

This is a challenging role with many threads. You must have a good eye for detail but also the ability to set and achieve clear objectives, managing your own workload and working well with others to achieve shared goals.

Key Requirements:

  • Postgraduate degree in Art History, English, or relevant related subjects.
  • Proven abilities as a writer, editor, and proof-reader for print and online media.
  • Experience in developing and delivering public programmes and events in an art gallery context, including managing AV and post-production of recorded events.
  • Knowledge of art, art history and art writing.
  • Enthusiasm for and belief in the value of outreach, excellent communication skills, and sensitivity to issues of equity and diversity.
