Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a lecturer (up to associate professor) in Environmental Studies to contribute to our teaching programmes in the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences (SGEES). Depending on the successful candidate’s experience and seniority, they may also take the role of leading our team of four.
We are looking for someone who is an excellent team member, and whose teaching and research interests both compliment and extend those of the existing team. To reflect our location in Aotearoa New Zealand and Te Moananui a Kiwa and the Mātauranga from this region, we are looking for someone who works closely with and preferably belongs to Māori and/or Pasifika communities.
Key Responsibilities:
Undertaking of impactful research and scholarship:
• within the core Environmental Studies programmatic themes of Mātauranga Māori and/or indigeneity, policy and institutions; politics and power; and drivers of human behaviour;
• that demonstrates ethical and reciprocal links with Māori and/or Pasifika communities;
• evidenced by a range of activities (e.g. building positive relationships with communities, community events, publishing in international and domestic journals, creative works, research funding);
• that engages constructively and productively with colleagues within and outside the University;
• that successfully attracts and supports research students into the discipline, School or Faculty.
Commitment to teaching and learning as evidenced by:
• Academically rigorous, research-led teaching that stimulates student learning in the Environmental Studies and, if possible, Climate Change Science & Policy programmes;
• A pedagogical approach that reflects Te Tiriti o Waitangi, our location in the Pacific, and a diverse student body that includes international students from a range of backgrounds.
Ō pūmanawa - About you
You will hold a PhD in environmental studies, environmental geography or a closely related discipline and have a well-established, internationally-recognised research profile in these or related disciplines. You will be able to teach in core papers of the undergraduate majors in Environmental Studies and Human Geography; teach postgraduate papers in Environmental Studies and, if possible, Climate Change Science and Policy; supervise postgraduate students, and pursue a dynamic programme of research within the core Environmental Studies programme, focused on Mātauranga Māori and/or Indigeneity. In addition, you will demonstrate leadership in building connections with Māori as Tangata Whenua.
