Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Lecturer in Mātauranga Māori Communication Design to join the School of Design Innovation. The position calls for a strong professional portfolio, research or writing in communication design with a focus on indigenous knowledge and experience teaching and working within interdisciplinary groups on successful, published projects.

• Academically rigorous teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
• Actively engage with industry, government, professions and diverse communities.
• Contribute to the collegial development of the major, School and Faculty in service roles.

Ō pūmanawa - About you

You will be familiar with contemporary discourse in the field of Māori visual languages and traditions and possess a broad understanding of the value diversity brings to communication design. A specialisation and evidence of success in one or more of the following is preferred:

• visual communication
• illustration
• information design
• critical writing in design

However, we are open to applications from a wide range of candidates that may contribute to researching and teaching in the area of Communication Design where there is a focus on indigenous knowledge. Strong evidence portfolios of creative work or research and student work is necessary.

A broad appreciation of cultural acumen now considered fundamental to the discipline will help you thrive in this role. Your engagement with Mātauranga Māori ideologies will enable a wider distribution of this knowledge across our Bachelor of Design Innovation. You will encourage a collaborative and supportive environment and a positive impact on the recruitment, retention and successes of Māori students and staff.

Key Requirements: 

• A developing record of scholarly research and creative practice that focuses on Māori visual traditions and languages.
• Demonstrated evidence of good oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated evidence of some successful teaching in a relevant field at tertiary level.
• Demonstrated ability to work with students and staff from a diverse range of backgrounds.
• A completed PhD in a relevant field, or other relevant qualifications commensurate with the role.
