Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role

Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a Technician Petrology to join the School of Geography, Environment and Earth Sciences. 

We are seeking an enthusiastic, energetic technician to support a high quality research and teaching programme across our petrology, thin section and rock crushing facilities.  The appointee will undertake the preparation and provision of petrographic thin section services including slide and mount preparations.  Additionally, they will also be responsible for the management of the School’s microscopy assets.

The Technician – Petrology works as part of a support technical team, and is expected to manage his/her own workload independently, whilst supporting each other in daily tasks or specific projects, especially during peak periods or staff absences.

You will be a motivated, customer-focused individual who can take the initiative, provide excellent output with timely delivery to internal and external customers and students.  You will be familiar with Health and Safety compliance and enjoy manufacturing quality products. 

You would bring your aptitude for all things mechanical and your practical skill set to maintain and improve the current processes utilising your geological knowledge.

You will thrive in this role with an excellent manner with people, strong attention to detail, and self-management skills. This role is busy, challenging, extremely rewarding and interesting for the individual with the right temperament. 

You will be a highly organised self-starter and natural relationship builder, who relishes working autonomously as well as contributing positively to a high performing team. You will need effective time management and forward planning to balance meeting deadlines and maintain a high standard of service to both students and staff. The ability to remain calm under pressure and thrive working with a diverse range of stakeholders. Are competent and comfortable working in a digital/online workspace.    

Key Requirements: 

  • Take responsibility for all processes for the operation of the Thin Section facility.
  • Manage and oversight of the operations of the rock crushing facility.
  • Manage the School’s microscopy assets (teaching and research).
  • Maintain equipment in a good and serviceable condition and ensure that the facility complies with the all legislation in relation to operation of research laboratories and users are instructed appropriately.
  • Ensure that a culture of safe practice is developed and maintained.
  • Research is supported in a timely and appropriate manner.
