Kōrero mō te tūranga - About the role
Te Herenga Waka - Victoria University of Wellington is currently recruiting a half-time Lecturer in Theatre specialising in Scenography. Scenography is a popular choice for many theatre students from second year to MFA levels. The successful candidate will contribute to the teaching in the Theatre Programme, coordinate and teach scenography courses at 200 and 300 level, and contribute to the teaching and supervision of productions in the Master of Fine Arts (Creative Practice) in Theatre. The appointee will also be expected to make a positive contribution to all of the activities of the programme, including administration tasks as required.
Ō pūmanawa - About you
We are seeking an energetic theatre practitioner with professional experience in one or more aspects of scenography, and experience teaching scenography at teritary level. You will need excellent people skills, the ability to relate well to students and to contribute positively to a team of committed theatre academics and technical staff.
Key requirements:
- A postgraduate qualification in Theatre.
- Professional experience as a theatre or performance designer.
- Experience teaching scenography at tertiary level.
- The ability to plan and deliver scenography courses at 200-level and above, including honours and MFA courses.
- The ability to lead and mentor scenography in MFA productions.
- The ability to maintain and build upon existing relationships with performing arts communities and organisations.

The Theatre Programme was established in 1970 and has a long and proud history of teaching theatre through a mix of theory and practice. It is the largest university Theatre Programme in the country, with courses in theatre history and theory, acting, classical theatre, devising, scenography, directing, scriptwriting, theatre production plus a number of special topics. The programme stages a variety of productions each year, including small scale in-house shows, devised works and full-length public productions. We have a fully equipped, flexible theatre (Studio 77) and three smaller studio spaces. Our students study theatre holistically, looking at all aspects of theatre production, and gain experience in a variety of production roles during their degree. Many of our graduates work in performing arts and screen industries, teaching, the media and a wide range of other professions. The Theatre Programme is committed to the principles of the Treaty of Waitangi and to diversity and inclusion in teaching and production work.
