Kōrero  te tūranga - About the role 

Āwhina is located within the Office of the DVC Māori. The role of Āwhina is to provide cultural and academic support programmes to enhance the retention and achievement of Māori students studying at Te Herenga Waka (Victoria University of Wellington). In addition, Āwhina provides a robust outreach programme designed to encourage and motivate Māori students to consider tertiary education as a career path. 

This role will be focused on increasing the participation, retention and degree completion of Māori students at Te Herenga Waka – Victoria University of Wellington. You will work with a team of Māori Advisors within a Māori environment to develop and deliver academic and non-academic support whilst motivating and enriching students through their studies. Together with high-quality record keeping and performance tracking for students, you will develop and maintain relationships with teaching staff, professional staff and community stakeholders. 

Ō pūmanawa - About you

Sound knowledge and understanding of Te Reo MāoriTikanga Māori, Te Tiriti o Waitangi and experience working within the tertiary sector is advantageous. As a highly organised, innovative and self-motivated individual, you will have proven experience of collaboration and communication across diverse cohorts. Exceptional time management, data analysis and report writing whilst maintaining a high standard of customer service is a must. 

Key requirements:

  • The ability to understand and apply the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
  • A high level of interpersonal skills through relationship management, advocacy and negotiation.
  • Proven experience in a relevant educational role such as academic learning support, teaching and mentoring. 
  • Advanced knowledge of Office 365 Suite, record management and data analysis.
