Telecom Engineer

Duration: Long term/ Permanent

Work hours: 8 hours/  5 days a week

 

 

Interfaces

  • Developing new opportunities with potential client and partner organisations.
  • Working as part of a design team to lead and delivery detailed design projects
  • Attending a range of project group and technical meetings
  • Obtain from client and provide a clear and accurate brief to design office engineering team
  • Visit design office with design briefing and partake in conference calls with design office engineers to discuss/review project
  • Review deliverables from design office in accordance with briefing requirements sent to them.
  • Provide technical audit of deliverables from design office
  • Present design proposals/solutions to client and design team
  • Prepare specifications and co-ordinate with all other documentation
  • Sign-off engineering documents/schedules/drawings/calculations received from design office
  • Use computer assisted project software for both project related calculations and products.
  • Ensure document control methods are being adhered to and quality control standards are being achieved
  • Contribute to development of quality and technical standards within the office

Responsibilities & Duties

Hands on experience with:

  • Protection Signalling
  • Provision of redundant FSK coded tele-protection signals on independent channels on the new EHV overhead transmission lines.
  • Data communication
  • Provision of necessary interfaces in the telecommunication equipment for transmission of data channels.
  • Equipment Specifications of:
  • Power line carrier (PLC) communication and protection signalling equipment for transmitting speech and tele-protection channels for overhead transmission line.
  • Coupling equipment comprising line traps, coupling capacitor voltage transformers, line matching units and carrier frequency cable, for connection of the carrier equipment with the transmission lines.
  • New single﷓channel PLC SSB sets with swing rack cabinets and all other material required for complete installation.
  • New protection signalling equipment for installation in the PLC cabinets.
  • Coupling equipment consisting of LTs and CCVTs.
  • LMUs for inter﷓circuit coupling with coupling filters, hybrid transformer, protection circuits and all materials required for complete installation.
  • HF cable to connect LMUs with associated PLC terminals and with each other.
  • Augmentation required at remote control centre of utility.
  • Signal to Noise Ratio Calculations in line with IEC 663 "Planning of (single sideband) power line carrier systems", detailing coupling equipment, line attenuation and any other losses to show that the proposed equipment on each PLC link.     
  • Telephone channels two-way (fully duplex) telephone channel shall be suitable for four wire working at transit stations, as determined by the requirements of the telephone scheme.
  • Voice frequency telegraph (VFT) channels
  • Equipment Service conditions with IEC recommendation 495.
  • Specification of telecom cubicles in line with IEC 529.
  • Tele-protection  Channel Requirements
  • Duplicated permissive protection set-1 and set-2 (for distance protection).
  • Duplicated direct protection (for breaker failure and over voltage protection).
  • Equipment Functions to receive coded frequency shift keyed FSK signals to be used in conjunction with the protective relaying and shall be suitable for the transmission of permissive tripping and direct inter-trip (breaker failure) signals suitable for operation with the protective gear at the substations.
  • PAX Equipment of digital stored program control type employing Pulse, Code Modulation (PCM) and Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) type, complying to the relevant recommendations of the CCITT.
  • PABX SYSTEM specification for substation & residential colony for the purposes of Administrative Traffic complying with the recommendations for ISDN system by the CCITT.
  • Design and Specification of Main Distribution Frame (MDF) an interface between the exchange and the cable network to the subscribers
  • Design, Specification and review of vendor drawings of Remote Terminal Unit (RTU) for Data Acquisition of Indications, Analog Values, Alarm Indications, and Control Orders to/from control centre to substation process level.
  • 48 volt DC power supply requirements for all of the PLC, tele-protection, SCADA and telephone equipment.

Profile

The ideal candidate will be a Chartered Engineer or working towards, educated to degree level in Telecom Engineering or equivalent and hold membership of relevant institutions.

Education

A electrical engineering graduate with specialization in Telecom/Electronics

Experience

A minimum of 7 years’ industry experience with the ability to run large projects and undertake a client facing role in the development, design and co-ordination of engineering

Specific Requirement

Working knowledge of IEC61850, IEC 529 and IEC663 protocols.
