Site Manager (PR-1553618) East Sussex, England

Job Title: Site Manager – Civil Engineering & Historic Restoration

Location: East Sussex / South East England

Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

Salary: Competitive (dependent on experience)

Role Overview

We are seeking an experienced Site Manager to join a leading principal civil engineering contractor delivering a high-profile, multi-million-pound coastal restoration project along the South Coast.

This role requires a proven operational leader to drive day-to-day site operations across a complex scheme involving structural steel and cast-iron restoration, concrete repairs, marine/coastal civil works, and public realm reconfigurations on a sensitive, Grade II*-listed heritage asset. You will oversee site safety, subcontractor management, programme delivery, and quality assurance while maintaining clear communication with key stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage daily site operations to ensure the project is delivered safely, on schedule, and within budget.

  • Coordinate, direct, and supervise directly employed labor, site engineers, and specialized sub-contractors (metalwork restoration, masonry, deep foundations, structural steel, and lift installations).

  • Manage site logistics, material deliveries, plant movement, and access across a constricted, public-facing coastal footprint.

  • Maintain look-ahead schedules and work alongside the Project Manager to track progress against the master programme.

  • Lead safety culture on-site, enforcing strict compliance with CDM regulations, company safety policies, and environmental standards.

  • Conduct daily site inductions, RAMS reviews, tool box talks, and pre-start briefings.

  • Implement robust controls to protect the surrounding coastal environment, local marine habitats, and adjacent public areas.

  • Oversee site quality management, ensuring works comply with contract drawings, technical specifications, and heritage restoration guidelines.

  • Drive the sign-off of Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) and ensure all site records, diaries, and quality documentation are completed accurately.

  • Manage interfaces with structural engineers, heritage inspectors, and temporary works coordinators to address unforeseen site conditions or structural variations promptly.

Candidate Requirements

  • HNC/HND or Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or equivalent trade-based site management experience.

  • SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme), CSCS Black/Gold Card, and First Aid at Work.

  • Proven experience as a Site Manager with a recognised principal civil engineering contractor.

  • Direct experience delivering structural civil engineering projects, reinforced concrete, structural steel frame installation, or coastal/marine infrastructure.

  • Strong subcontractor management skills and the ability to lead multi-disciplinary teams in high-risk environments.

  • Experience managing historic structure restorations, listed assets, or complex cast-iron/masonry refurbishment is highly desirable.

  • Working knowledge of temporary works coordination (TWC qualification is a plus).

  • Experience delivering projects in coastal, tidal, or public-adjacent environments.
