About the business

This is a 350-person consultancy, and the people who work there own it. They started 30 years ago and now have eight offices across Australia. The work is serious: Defence facilities in five states, and $3bn+ hospital builds.

But ask anyone inside what makes it different, and they'll talk about the people.

The acoustics lead knows every mechanical engineer in every office by name. When his team needs something from another discipline, it's a phone call, not a ticket. One of his engineers joined 18 months ago and says the culture is what stands out most.

People don't get stuck here. Every engineer has a career plan built around where they want to go, not a grade chart. Some have opened new offices. Plenty have gone from graduate to director. About 40 directors now run the business, and their average age is 42.

And if you want a stake in what you build, you can have one. Ownership used to start at associate. Now it's open to senior engineers, and a couple got equity in the last round.

The role

The acoustics team started 18 months ago and word has spread fast. There are around 35 live projects on the go, and more coming in from clients who already trust the business.

You'll come in as the senior engineer and second in charge of the national team. Part of your job is getting the workload back to a level that suits everyone.

You'll take won projects and run them yourself. That means client meetings, site measurements, modelling in SoundPLAN and Insul, and reports, all the way through to QA. In the hiring manager's words: "These are your projects. Go and do your thing."

Most of the work (70 to 80%) is building acoustics across health, education and Defence. The rest is environmental, and he wants that side to grow. Some jobs are quick acoustic-only ones you'll turn around in weeks. Others are multidisciplinary projects that run for years.

You'll review work from two capable junior engineers and help them grow. And when the national lead is on leave, you're the one trusted to keep things running.

You get to build acoustics in your city from scratch. Around 20 people across the business have clients who want acoustics. They just need someone who has the time to deliver it. Brisbane alone has a big pipeline of health and Olympics work coming.

Worried you'd be on your own? You won't be. It's one national team that shares resourcing and meets every Monday. Your manager travels interstate often, and your office has a local leader who backs you day to day.

Nobody expects you to bring in work from day one. You'll be coached into business development as you go.

What you'll need

• Around 5 to 8 years in acoustic consulting, mostly building and architectural acoustics
• Experience running projects end to end and dealing with clients on your own
• A real appetite to build something, not just deliver the next job
• Australian citizenship preferred, because a lot of the upcoming Defence work needs baseline clearance

If you've worked at both a big multidisciplinary firm and a boutique acoustic consultancy, even better.
