 About us:-

The Walter and Eliza Hall Institute was established in 1915 and is Australia’s oldest medical research institute.  Our teams of researchers are committed to solving the most complex health problems, making transformative discoveries for cancer, infectious and immune diseases, developmental disorders and healthy ageing.  These discoveries have advanced our understanding of human biology and resulted in new and more effective treatments for patients worldwide. This year has seen the institute turn its resources to address the ongoing challenge of COVID-19, specifically studying immunity response to the disease. 

 Key responsibilities:-

Reporting directly to the Chief Financial Officer, you will be responsible for the day to day operations of the finance function and operate informally as Deputy CFO as required. Key aspects of the role include:-

  • Oversight of a team of 13 finance professionals, managed through three direct reports
  • Ensure the timely and accurate processing of all financial transactions, leading to a smooth and rigorous month and year end close
  • Ensure adherence to all statutory reporting requirements
  • Deliver robust and accurate budgeting, forecasting and reporting processes
  • Collaborate closely with the CFO to ensure a cohesive, efficient, and value-adding finance business offering is enjoyed by all stakeholders within the institute
  • Develop and report against key performance indicators, including finance reports to key stakeholders such as division and laboratory heads as well as service departments
  • Provide astute financial input to the strategic planning process including the annual budget and five-year strategic plan
  • Promote and foster a culture of continuous improvement, identifying and acting on opportunities for system and process improvement
  • Secure the ongoing health of the finance function by ensuring a robust succession plan is a constant feature, and in place at all levels

Key requirements:-

  • Tertiary qualified in accounting/commerce or similar, and CA/CPA qualified
  • You will possess prior experience in a senior financial management role, ideally gained within the not-for-profit sector
  • With a broad-based technical expertise across financial/statutory and management accounting, you also offer expert delivery of modern finance business partnering techniques
  • Outstanding stakeholder management skills, with a proven track record in delivering value add financial advice to senior, non-finance audiences
  • A demonstrable track record of system and process improvements gained within a complex environment
