What’s the role?
The purpose of this position is to support families to raise children in safe and supportive environments, through the delivery of culturally appropriate therapeutic interventions, such as counselling and a group program to children and their families living in the Katherine region (township and remote). The position consults with and at times works alongside the Aboriginal Identified Child and Family Support Workers and / or Aboriginal and Islander Cultural Advisers in a two-way learning model.

Duties include:

  • Develop, document, oversee and provide on-site effective, innovative and culturally appropriate therapeutic responses for children and families within the Katherine Region, often including Indigenous communities within the region, as outlined in the applicable service agreements
  • Liaise closely, within a care team framework; with other services, schools and caseworkers involved in the support of the children and families targeted in this program
  • Define and develop a best-practice methodology for client engagement including culturally appropriate resource materials and evaluation tools underpinned by the models funded
  • Positively support child(ren) and families from the target group to other appropriate support services and networks, facilitate opportunities for interventions which impact whole family
  • Plan and co-facilitate therapeutic group programs within contract guidelines.

Is this the right role for you?
Not limited to but before you apply, we need you to have:

  • Qualifications in Social Work, Psychology or other relevant Humanitarian or Social Science qualification, as well as experience working therapeutically (delivering group programs and/or one on one) with children in a professional setting
  • Drumbeat accreditation or a willingness to undertake training and accreditation
  • Knowledge and understanding of the dynamics and effects of ‘high impact stress’ and other trauma on children and on family functioning including the effects of child abuse and neglect
  • A satisfactory Northern Territory working with children’s check and satisfactory National Criminal History Check
  • Possession of a current NT Driver’s License.
