What’s the role?
The Aboriginal Mental Health Worker will play a key role in the provision of providing holistic and culturally appropriate mental health care services, including social and emotional wellbeing education and promotion to the clients, their families, and significant others within Nhulunbuy, Groote Eylandt and Arnhem Land communities. Mental Health Services provided to clients in the region include initial assessment, individual counselling, facilitating groups and events, linking clients to resources, supports and services as appropriate, and educating and advising referrers.

Duties include:

  • Establish links with local Indigenous communities and stakeholders in conjunction with Mental Health Professionals to encourage and support the delivery of mental health services to individuals and groups. Assist with organising and planning mental health awareness events within community
  • Provide practical assistance to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients to access programs and associated partner appointments. This may include advocacy, transport, and support to attend GPs appointments, and to access other health services as required, including GP care planning, follow-up care, relevant diagnostic tests and /or referrals to other providers (including allied health), specialist services, community pharmacies and care coordination
  • Distribute information/resources to local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities about the programs’ services that are available in their community, and how they can access them
  • Documentation of Daily Activities including numbers of clients seen, numbers of meetings attended, community contacts etc. as directed by the Mental Health Professional
  • Work alongside the Outlook Psychology clinical team to support Nhulunbuy and surrounding communities.

Is this the right role for you?
Not limited to but before you apply, we need you to have:

  • Completion of or willingness to undertake Certificate IV in Mental Health or Certificate IV in Indigenous Mental Health (Social and Emotional Wellbeing)
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively and sensitively with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples
  • Knowledge and experience in the provision of mental health promotion programs. Some understanding of the impact of mental illness on individuals within remote Aboriginal communities, including complex trauma or the willingness to undertake appropriate training in this area
  • Current “C” Class Drivers Licence and a willingness to travel within the region in keeping with work commitments
  • National Police Clearance check prior to commencing employment; and Northern Territory Ochre Working with Children Card
