Key experience: Special purpose machinery, bespoke machinery, machinery automation systems, management/leadership skills
We are seeking a Design Manager with a strong background in mechanical engineering and prior experience as a design engineer. The ideal candidate should have experience designing special purpose machinery/bespoke automated machinery, including packaging machinery, bagging machinery, or other forms of high-speed machinery.
Responsibilities include managing the Design Department to ensure all design and R&D needs are identified and carried out in line with quality, cost, and safety standards. The Mechanical Design Manager will also develop and communicate a design strategy and vision for existing and future machines and product development.
The successful candidate should have excellent organisational and project management skills, including the ability to plan and organise the department to meet design workload and ensure that the department produces work of a high standard. In addition, they should have experience managing and leading a team of engineers, including performance reviews and motivating team members to identify objectives and development opportunities.
Other responsibilities include managing the infrastructure within the department, liaising with relevant departments to agree on machine specifications, and providing mechanical engineering expertise to projects from the concept stage through to commissioning. The Mechanical Design Manager should also provide innovative engineering solutions to machine design problems, research any processes that include uncertainty, and contribute towards maintaining high standards of Health & Safety.
The ideal candidate will have a positive attitude, be professional, patient, and approachable. They should work closely with the Engineering Director to drive efficiency within the department by implementing processes and standardisation and guide the department to help the business meet its current mid-to-long term Business Strategy and Vision.
