Salary: GBP400 - GBP450 per day

Temporary Works Design Engineer

My industry leading tier 1 civil engineering contractor is seeking an experienced Temporary Works Design Engineer to join their design team on a major multi-disciplinary infrastructure project.

In this dedicated role, you will be responsible for producing, checking, and managing structural calculations and drawings for temporary engineering solutions across live operational environments. You will work directly alongside site delivery teams, Temporary Works Coordinators (TWCs), and principal designers to ensure all temporary structures are safe, constructible, and fully compliant with industry standards.

 Candidate Responsibilities:

  • Produce detailed structural calculations, design concepts, and engineering drawings for a wide range of temporary works including crane working platforms, piling mats, excavation support/shoring, formwork, falsework, scaffolding, propping, and temporary access bridges.
  • Execute Category 1, 2, and 3 design checks in strict compliance with BS 5975 code of practice and my clients temporary works procedure management systems.
  • Liaise directly with site managers, TWCs, and subcontractors to convert operational site constraints into practical, efficient temporary design solutions.
  • Perform hazard identification, risk assessments, and constructability reviews, ensuring all designs comply with CDM 2015 Regulations and mitigate site-level risk during erection, use, and dismantling phases.
  • Review external subcontractor temporary works proposals and resolve Technical Queries (TQs) and Requests for Information (RFIs) swiftly to avoid construction downtime.

Candidate Requirements:

  • Degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering, or an equivalent engineering qualification.
  • Proven track record as a Temporary Works Design Engineer or Senior TW Designer within heavy civil engineering or major rail/infrastructure delivery environments.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of BS 5975, Eurocodes, and CDM 2015 regulations.
  • Proficiency in structural analysis and frame/calculation software (e.g., Tekla Structural Designer, STAAD Pro, Robot, or IDEA Statica) alongside 2D/3D CAD tools (AutoCAD, MicroStation).
  • Professional qualification with ICE or IStructE (CEng, IEng, or working towards) is highly desirable; TW Design training certification is an advantage.
  • Excellent technical writing and interpersonal skills, with a practical, hands-on approach to site-level engineering challenges.
