Salary: £12.21 - £15.07 per hour

The Port Warehouse Operative plays a key role in the smooth handling, storage, and movement of cargo through the port facility. This involves working closely with shipping, transport, and customs teams to ensure goods are received, stored, and dispatched efficiently, safely, and in compliance with port regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Receive and unload cargo arriving by ship, road, or rail, following port security and safety procedures.

  • Accurately check and record incoming goods against manifests and documentation.

  • Handle breakbulk, containerized, and palletized cargo safely using appropriate equipment.

  • Pick, pack, and prepare goods for dispatch in line with shipping schedules and customer requirements.

  • Load outgoing containers and vehicles efficiently, ensuring correct weight distribution and securing of cargo.

  • Support customs clearance processes by ensuring correct labeling, documentation, and segregation of goods.

  • Operate port-specific equipment such as reach stackers, forklifts, and container handling gear (where licensed).

  • Maintain warehouse and quayside areas in a safe, clean, and organized condition.

  • Follow strict health & safety, port security, and environmental procedures at all times.

  • Assist in stock control, inventory checks, and movement records using port systems or handheld scanners.

  • Communicate effectively with vessel crews, hauliers, customs officers, and internal teams to coordinate operations.


Skills & Qualifications

  • Previous experience in a port, dockside, or large-scale logistics warehouse environment (preferred).

  • Valid forklift or heavy plant licenses (e.g., counterbalance, reach stacker, container handler) advantageous.

  • Good understanding of port operations, cargo handling, and customs procedures.

  • Ability to follow safety and security protocols in a regulated environment.

  • Good numeracy, literacy, and attention to detail for handling manifests and cargo records.

  • Physically fit and capable of manual handling and working outdoors in varying weather conditions.

  • Strong teamwork and communication skills.

  • Flexibility to work shifts, including nights, weekends, and public holidays as required by shipping schedules.


Working Conditions

  • Based in a port/warehouse environment with exposure to the outdoors and changing weather.

  • Involves manual handling, working at height, and operating heavy machinery.

  • Shift work is required to align with vessel arrivals and departures, including overtime at short notice.

  • PPE and safety training are mandatory and provided.
