The Faculty of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (FHSE) brings together expertise from the humanities, linguistics, cognitive sciences, social and educational sciences. People from across 20 disciplines are working within the Faculty. Along with the disciplinary approach a very ambitious interdisciplinary research culture has been developed.
The faculty’s research and teaching focuses on social, economic, political and educational issues with the common goal of contributing to an inclusive, open and resourceful society. The FHSE offers six Bachelor and twenty Master degrees and a doctoral school providing students with the necessary knowledge and high-qualified skills to succeed in their future career.
Your Role...
The doctoral researcher will be enrolled in the Social Science track of the Doctoral School in Humanities and Social Sciences (DSHSS) of the University of Luxembourg and will be a member of the Institute for Research on Socio-Economic Inequalities (IRSEI).
The doctoral researcher will:
- Conduct research that will compose a PhD thesis in Social Sciences
- Aim to publish academic articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals
- Disseminate results in national and international conferences
- Participate in and contribute to the organization of academic activities of the Institute for Research on socio-Economic Inequalities (IRSEI)
We expect the candidate to elaborate research enhancing understanding of the determinants and consequences of various forms of socio-economic inequalities. We are particularly – although not exclusively – interested in innovative research on the impact of policy interventions on, e.g., income dynamics, wealth accumulation, poverty, economic security, discrimination, segregation. Research might exploit large-scale, comparative micro-data sources but we also encourage proposals exploring simulation and AI-based models or innovative data collection approaches.
The doctoral researcher will be supervised by Prof. Philippe Van Kerm.

- Master degree in a social science discipline (economics, sociology, political science or a related field)
- Excellent skills in (and a taste for) quantitative research
- Capacity to combine creativity and rigor
- Excellent writing skills
- Ability to work autonomously within an interdisciplinary team
- Fluency in English
