Our client is looking for Payroll Lead / Assistant Payroll Manager to lead payroll delivery for 4,500 Employees | Newly Created Role | High‑Performing Team.

About the Opportunity

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced payroll professional to step into a newly created leadership role supporting a workforce of approximately 4,500 employees. As the Payroll Lead / Assistant Payroll Manager, you’ll take ownership of end‑to‑end payroll delivery, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and timely processing in a fast‑paced, decentralised environment.

Working closely with the Head of Payroll and senior leaders across the business, you’ll play a key role in driving payroll excellence, supporting operations, and contributing to a high‑performance, low‑bureaucracy culture. This is a hands‑on leadership role where you’ll coach and develop a skilled team, streamline processes, and champion continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • End‑to‑end payroll leadership — Oversee daily payroll operations to ensure all employees are paid accurately and on time.
  • Award & legislative compliance — Manage minimum wage and award rate reviews to ensure compliance with Fair Work and government requirements.
  • Payroll calendar management — Prioritise and coordinate payroll activities to meet strict deadlines.
  • Stakeholder engagement — Partner with senior leaders to ensure correct onboarding and timely resolution of personnel issues.
  • Team coaching & development — Train, mentor, and support payroll team members to ensure consistent, high‑quality processes.
  • Annual processes — Coordinate annual salary updates and profit‑share/bonus payments.
  • Process improvement — Identify opportunities for efficiency, support change management, and implement improved processes.
  • Documentation & governance — Maintain accurate payroll procedures and ensure updates are made when processes change.
  • Employee lifecycle administration — Manage onboarding, salary changes, terminations, back‑payments, and overpayment recovery.
  • Superannuation compliance — Conduct quarterly reviews to ensure SG compliance and prevent cap breaches.
  • Reporting — Deliver month‑end and end‑of‑cycle reporting to Finance.

Key Skills Required:

  • 5+ years payroll leadership experience in a medium–large organisation, managing teams of 5+.
  • Solid understanding of Australian payroll legislation, awards, and compliance requirements
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and develop payroll teams.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical skills, and a commitment to accuracy and quality assurance
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and operate effectively in a fast-paced environment
  • High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced, high‑volume environment.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • A proactive, solutions‑focused mindset with a passion for continuous improvement.
  • Strong technical proficiency in payroll systems and advanced Excel.
  • Experience with Connx and Micropay is highly regarded.
