Scientist I, New Discovery & Platform

W2 Contract-to-Hire

Salary Range: $135,200 - $145,600 per year

Location: Redwood City, CA - Onsite Role

Job Summary:

We are seeking a curious and dedicated Scientist to join the New Discovery & Platform team within Discovery Sciences. The successful candidate will support early-stage discovery efforts to interrogate new targets, deploy current oncology assay technologies, and develop new technology platforms to advance drug discovery. This primarily lab-focused role will contribute at the bench by developing lysate-based assays, supporting pooled screening, and advancing new assay platforms. In addition to strong experimental skills, we seek a scientist who bridges chemistry and biology, with a track record of creative, innovative assay development to expand our discovery capabilities.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and apply methods for screening protein–protein interactions (e.g., MSD, BLI) to assess target engagement in physiologically relevant contexts.
  • Apply and expand biochemical and biophysical assay platforms, including TR-FRET, fluorescence polarization (FP), surface plasmon resonance (SPR), biolayer interferometry (BLI), and mass spectrometry.
  • Design, develop, and execute pooled screening experiments (e.g., DEL, display technologies such as mRNA or yeast display).
  • Perform chemical or protein conjugation/labeling to support assay development, target characterization, and platform innovation.
  • Interrogate new therapeutic targets while deploying current oncology assay technologies and contributing to new technology development.
  • Optimize, troubleshoot, and analyze assays to support early-stage discovery projects.
  • Collaborate closely with internal partners to integrate experimental outcomes into broader discovery strategies.
  • Maintain accurate, timely, and detailed documentation of experiments and findings.
  • Support automation workflows and contribute to data analysis pipelines for high-throughput studies.

Requirements and Qualifications:

  • PhD in Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or related field (0–3 years of relevant industry or postdoctoral experience).
  • Evidence of bridging chemistry and biology, with a demonstrated track record of innovative assay development.
  • Strong foundation in biochemical and biophysical methods for protein–ligand interactions, protein–protein interactions, and enzymatic activity measurement.
  • Hands-on experience with target engagement assays, TR-FRET, FP, SPR, BLI, mass spectrometry, pooled screening approaches (e.g., DEL, mRNA display, yeast display), and/or chemical/protein conjugation or labeling.
  • Proficiency in data analysis, statistical interpretation, and experimental design.
  • Demonstrated ability to excel in a primarily lab-focused environment with precision and attention to detail.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Familiarity with laboratory automation systems and high-throughput workflows.
  • Experience with large dataset handling and visualization tools (e.g., Genedata, Spotfire, KNIME, Vortex).
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic setting.
