Senior Control Technician
W2 Contract-to-Hire
Salary Range: $68,640- $74,900 per year
Location: Boulder, CO - Hybrid Role
Job Summary:
We are seeking a skilled and adaptable Senior Controls Technician to take ownership of control panel fabrication, wiring, and integration across our pilot-scale and production systems. This role is hands-on and central to bringing our automation systems to life. The ideal candidate is mechanically inclined, detail-oriented, and thrives in a fast-paced startup environment. Beyond technical execution, this person will help develop documentation, mentor technicians, and ensure our build quality meets industry standards.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Build, wire, and integrate industrial control panels according to schematics and layouts.
- Perform panel layout, drilling, mounting, and enclosure modifications.
- Execute wiring pulls, conduit routing, labeling, and cable management.
- Integrate PLC, HMI, VFD, relays, power supplies, and instrumentation into panels.
- Perform continuity testing, power-up checks, and troubleshooting during builds.
- Support installation and field integration of control systems.
- Create and maintain SOPs, wiring standards, and build documentation.
- Train and mentor other technicians on panel assembly and wiring best practices.
- Support commissioning, startup, and maintenance activities as needed.
- Ensure compliance with safety standards (UL508A, NFPA 70E, OSHA).
Requirements and Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 8+ years of experience in control panel assembly, wiring, and integration.
- Strong proficiency in reading and interpreting schematics, wiring diagrams, and layouts.
- Proven skills in cable terminations, labeling, and structured wiring practices.
- Mechanical aptitude for drilling, cutting, mounting, and modifying enclosures.
- Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, and test equipment (multimeters, logic analyzers).
- Ability to troubleshoot wiring and integration issues independently.
- Solid knowledge of industrial safety practices (Lockout/Tagout, PPE, electrical safety).
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail in craftsmanship.
- Ability to prioritize multiple projects and work independently or in cross-functional teams.
- Commitment to documenting work clearly and accurately.
- Associate's degree or technical certification in Electrical Technology, Mechatronics, Industrial Automation,
- or related field (or equivalent hands-on experience).
- Experience with PLC/HMI hardware integration (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, or similar).
- Familiarity with UL508A design principles and panel design software (AutoCAD Electrical, EPLAN, SolidWorks Electrical).
- Exposure to industrial networking protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profinet).
- Knowledge of motor controls, VFDs, instrumentation, and I/O wiring for process control.
- Hands-on experience in pilot plant or R&D-scale process environments.
- Familiarity with SCADA/ignition systems and tag mapping is a plus.
- Ability to standardize panel build processes and drive continuous improvement.
- Prior experience in training or mentoring junior technicians.
