Job Title: Junior CNC Operator / Setter (Star Sliding Head)
Location: Mayo
Reports to: CNC Supervisor / Production Manager
Type: Permanent, full-time
Role Purpose
To support the machining team by operating and assisting in the setup of Star Multi Axis sliding head CNC lathes (Fanuc control), producing high-precision components safely, efficiently, and consistently.
This is a development role suited to a junior machinist who can run production, complete in-process checks, and progressively take on more setup and program-edit responsibility under supervision.
Key Responsibilities
CNC Operation & Production Running (Primary)
- Operate Star Multi Axis sliding head CNC lathes (Fanuc control) in line with standard procedures and training.
- Load/unload parts, start cycles, monitor machining performance, and respond to alarms/issues appropriately.
- Complete routine tool changes and basic machine adjustments as trained and authorised.
- Escalate process concerns (tool wear, finish issues, dimensional drift) to the setter/programmer/supervisor promptly.
- Assist with machine setups and changeovers under supervision: tooling preparation, work holding, bar feed checks, offsets support.
- Support prove-out activities including first-off checks and confirmation of stable running.
- Help maintain setup sheets and basic job documentation.
- Carry out minor, controlled edits at the machine under instruction (e.g., offsets, wear adjustments; simple line edits where permitted).
- Exposure to CAD/CAM is an advantage, with opportunity to develop programming skills over time.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings (GD&T exposure advantageous).
- Carry out in-process inspection using general measuring equipment (micrometers, verniers, pin gauges, etc.).
- Support first-article inspection and record results clearly.
- Ensure components meet dimensional, visual, and surface finish requirements.
- Maintain strong housekeeping, safety, and tool control standards.
- Work closely with Production, Engineering and Quality teams.
- Participate in continuous improvement initiatives and training.
- Support/learn from senior machinists and contribute positively to team output.
Required Experience & Skills
- 6–24 months’ experience in a CNC machining environment or relevant engineering training (apprenticeship modules / technical college / placement).
- Basic understanding of CNC machining and safe working practices.
- Ability to follow work instructions and use measuring equipment.
- Ability to read basic engineering drawings (tolerances training supported).
- Good attention to detail, reliability, and willingness to learn.
- Exposure to sliding head / Swiss-type lathes.
- Familiarity with Fanuc controls.
- Experience machining precision parts (medical/aerospace/high tolerance).
- Interest in CAD/CAM and developing toward programming.
Qualifications / Background
- Apprenticeship (in progress or completed) or equivalent practical engineering experience.
- Formal CNC / machining qualification advantageous KSGalway
