About the Role



A leading government organisation at the forefront of digital transformation is seeking a Lead Technical Architect to help shape the future of public digital services.


This role offers a unique opportunity to influence the architecture behind a high-impact national app used by millions of UK citizens. The app combines native mobile capabilities with AI-driven features to deliver proactive, personalised services directly from the government to the public.

You’ll play a key role in designing and delivering a new suite of AWS-based services—critical APIs and integrations with key departments such as HMRC, DWP, DVLA and more.


Key Responsibilities



As a Lead Technical Architect, you will:
• Design scalable, secure, and resilient AWS serverless services supporting national-scale applications
• Set and maintain architectural standards, ensuring alignment with broader technical strategies and government digital objectives
• Provide expert consultancy to internal and external engineering teams, ensuring technical designs are robust, cost-effective, and meet user needs
• Lead cross-functional technical planning, resolving dependencies and driving collaboration between multiple stakeholders
• Mentor and support junior architects and engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation
• Prototype and test new ideas, contributing hands-on to the development of cutting-edge services
• Act as a visible leader across the digital community—blogging, speaking, and contributing to recruitment efforts

What We're Looking For



We’re looking for individuals with:
• Proven experience in AWS architecture, particularly with serverless and event-driven models
• A track record of delivering scalable platforms handling high volumes of traffic and sensitive data
• Deep technical expertise in software development, cloud-native services, DevOps, CI/CD, and one or more programming languages (e.g., JavaScript)
• Experience leading platforms used by other engineering teams, with a focus on reusable APIs and infrastructure
• The ability to communicate complex technical ideas clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
• Strong understanding of cloud security principles and modern architecture patterns
• Experience in technical leadership, governance, and working in agile, multidisciplinary teams
