Scientist / Sr. Scientist, Discovery Research & Development
Direct Hire Full-Time Role
Salary Range: $104,000 - $145,600 per year
Location: Berkeley, CA - Onsite Role
Job Summary:
As a Scientist / Sr. Scientist on the discovery research & development team, the selected candidate will be responsible for designing and executing experiments that evaluate the efficacy of therapeutic cargo candidates and will play a crucial role in advancing our therapeutic products from discovery to the clinic.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Design and execute laboratory experiments while following defined protocols and procedures. Troubleshoot and update protocols and procedures as needed.
- Perform molecular, cellular, and virological techniques including (but not limited to) molecular cloning; DNA/RNA/protein purification; PCR; qPCR; western blot; ELISA; immunofluorescence; next-generation sequencing preparation and data analysis; cancer cell culture maintenance, amplification, and transfection; and genetic manipulation, isolation, amplification, purification, titration, and transduction of poxvirus or lentivirus-based viral vectors; and inoculation of murine models with experimental cancer therapeutics.
- Analyze and interpret scientific data to drive decision-making and prioritization of therapeutic product candidates.
- Maintain a current knowledge of preclinical and clinical oncolytic virotherapy and cancer biology literature.
- Contribute to the development of project timelines.
- Interface with other groups such as the CMC/In Vivo team to support cross-functional initiatives.
- Maintain accurate and well-organized experimental records, including electronic laboratory notebooks.
- Write, edit, and review preclinical study reports, manuscripts, and preclinical sections of documents in support of regulatory submissions.
- Maintain compliance with the institution’s Environmental Health & Safety policies.

Requirements and Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. with 1-5 years of post-graduate industry experience in molecular or cellular biology, virology, biochemistry, bioengineering, or a closely related field.
- Prior experience and willingness to work with viral vectors and in vivo murine research models.
- Prior scientific productivity as evidenced by authorship of research publications.
- Ability to function independently to design, develop, and execute new assays.
- Rigorous analysis and rational interpretation of diverse, multifaceted data sets.
- Excellent ability to multitask, support multiple projects in parallel, and adhere to ambitious timelines.
- Efficient working knowledge of operational and scientific software programs, including Benchling, Geneious, GraphPad Prism, and Illustrator.
- Excellent communication skills (both written and oral) with demonstrated ability to present ideas, information, and data effectively to diverse audiences.
- Strong work ethic, flexibility, and collaborative mindset.
- Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. and able to report daily to our Berkeley, CA-based lab.
- Hands-on experience in mouse handling and basic in vivo experimental techniques.
- Experience with designing and executing computational approaches for next-generation sequencing analysis.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Proficiency in Python and R coding languages for data analysis.
