Apprentice Support Worker (Adults and Children with Learning Disabilities)


Vacancy Description

The trainee support worker will work with a broad group of people with a wide range of disabilities including communication difficulties and challenging behaviour. They will help individuals and groups access community facilities, assist with communication where necessary and aid with personal care if appropriate. The post holder will need to be able to work in a manner which respects and recognises the value of our service users as individuals. He or she will need to be able to help with the planning of activities, produce written records of work undertaken and recognise and promote the achievements of all. They will be prompt, reliable and committed to personal learning and development. Experience of adults or children with a disability or an interest in working with those with a disability would be an advantage. There will be many opportunities to be involved in a broad range of support, from personal care, music therapy, sports, arts and crafts and social activities. We can offer you the chance to develop a wide variety of support skills whilst also joining a committed team of people dedicated to improving the lives of those with learning disability in the local area. Your training will enable you to meet the needs of people with a wide range of disabilities and associated special needs.

Mainly delivered and assessed in the workplace. There are also regular off the job workshops held at Farnborough College of Technology to achieve Diploma in Health and Social Care Level 2 and Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care Level 2 If going to College full-time is not for you what about combining studying with paid employment in your chosen field. Farnborough College of Technology offer a combination of work and college based learning managed through its Business Services department. All Apprentices are supported with an Individual Learning Plan which will set out each stage of the training and where it will take place. The duration of the training programme is dependent on the individual’s needs and is regularly reviewed as the Apprentice progresses through the programme. As a student of the College the Business Services department will be supporting you fully in your development. Expected Duration 12-18 months


Skills Required

- Interest in working with adults and children with disabilities - Ability to relate to people and enjoy working as part of a team - Excellent communication skills both verbal and non verbal - Good clear literacy skills - Interest in working in the charity or not for profit sector - Commitment to training and self development


Qualifications Required

GCSE (or equivalent) in Maths and English Grade A-D


Personal Qualities

- Be confident, approachable, flexible and reliable - Be able to understand and apply the principles of confidentiality - Ability to work independently and as part of a team - Experience of people with a learning disability and/or ability to relate to vulnerable adults and children


Important Other Information

Candidates for this role will need to be committed to working with people with disabilities and will need to be able to cope with the range of disabilities that our service users experience. £5.03 per hour on satisfactory completion of first year. From 1st October 2013 The National Minimum Wage (NMW) rate for apprentices is £2.68 per hour. This applies to 16-18 year old apprentices and those aged over 19 in the first year of their Apprenticeship. For all other apprentices the National Minimum wage appropriate to their age applies. The Minimum Wage for Apprentices applies to time spent on the job plus time spent training.
