Senior Exploration Geoscientist

Senior Exploration Geoscientist (BBBH105667) Sarawak, Malaysia

As the Senior Exploration Geoscientist you will be accountable for planning and proactively driving the Exploration content and quality of a number of defined projects/studies. Working as a senior technical member of a team, your role may include the planning, coordination and delivery of document and data management/QC, regional studies/stratigraphic evaluation, play-based evaluation, seismic interpretation, opportunity evaluation, prospect maturation, risk and volumetric assessment, well delivery/operations and after action reviews.

This position reports into the Exploration Team Leader. Key responsibilities include:

• Contribute to the planning and coordination of team activities.
• Identify new exploration concepts and opportunities, grounded by appropriate analogues.
• Plan and execute regional or prospect-specific studies, incorporating play-based evaluation, well correlation and interpretation of 2D/3D seismic data to produce quality maps. Mature opportunities/leads/prospects in line with XORP
• Prepare auditable volumes and risking for identified leads and prospects.
• Write well proposals and evaluation reports.
• Safely deliver exploration and appraisal wells (including wellsite support), ensuring compliance with appropriate DEM/DEP standards and strict adherence to HSSE best practices. Proactively accountability for HSSE and will apply Goal Zero and the Life Saving Rules as well as influencing and encouraging others to adopt these practices.
• QC and ensure all team work has the appropriate level of technical assurance.
• Participate actively/leads project framings and peer reviews, and contributes to partner meetings and other related activities.
• Ensure all work products are fully documented and manage data in conformance with Shell procedures.
• Proactively share knowledge, learnings and best practices with colleagues and the wider exploration community e.g. conferences, SKS etc.
• Maintain active awareness of current technology developments (internal and external) and in collaboration with PTU deploy fit-for-purpose new technology (e.g. Sensors to Decisions), taking advantage of central support/expertise.
• Maintain and apply awareness of competitor activities (successes and failures) to the evolving understanding of petroleum systems.
• Lead portfolio development and ranking, based on economic metrics, coupled with commercial analysis with a clear link to value.
• Provides support to annual business planning and ARPR reporting.
• Ensure effective staff coaching, motivation and development and assume at least one official coaching relationship.

Skills & Requirements:
• Advanced university degree in Geoscience (M.Sc. or PhD) and 8+ years’ experience in Exploration Geosciences or related subsurface evaluation work.
• Fulfils or exceeds the JCP requirements for a Senior Exploration Geoscientist JG3, with proven Skills in the core Exploration competences of Regional Evaluation, Seismic Interpretation and Prospect Volume & Risking, together with a number of the other Geoscience competences (based on prior experience).
• Proven experience and effectiveness across the range of Exploration from frontier growth evaluation, Sensors to Decisions, stratigraphy and regional studies, prospect evaluation/maturation, well delivery/operations and AARs.
• Strong technical/analytical skills and the ability to integrate complex datasets.
• Coordination of XORP, together with a strong focus on HSE.
• Adept with key Exploration software, including nDi.
• Prime mover in bringing together all aspects of petroleum system analysis into a seamlessly integrated whole.
• Skilled in collaboration and integration with technical experts from other disciplines, especially related to process safety requirements: pore pressure prediction, shallow hazard analysis, depth conversion techniques, petrophysical analysis and geochemistry related H2S analysis.
• Skill level for risk and uncertainty analysis and volumetrics. Excellent understanding of probabilistic ranges and outcomes and the impact on project economics and commerciality. Able to describe the full range of outcomes in a clear and robust way.
• Ability to develop and maintain collaborative and inclusive working relationships based on mutual respect, i.e. a senior team player with well-developed interpersonal, who enjoys working in multi-disciplinary and multi-cultural teams and can consistently get the best out of others.
• The ability to clearly communicate geological issues to other team members and stakeholders as well as having well-developed presentation skills.
• Demonstration of drive, enthusiasm and can-do attitude, with an open mind set and a desire to develop own and others skills as well as learning from successes and failures.
• Demonstrable ability in coaching and developing more junior members of the skill pool.
