INTERIM HR DIRECTOR – 12 Month FTC – £Competitive - York, North Yorkshire

The Retreat; Established over 200 years ago and the first place where people with mental health problems were treated humanely and with dignity and respect, are seeking to appoint an Interim HR Director. The Retreat is a charitable, not-for-profit provider of specialist mental health care. We work closely with the NHS to provide services for people with complex and challenging needs in an open, calming environment designed to enable recovery and independence. Reporting to the Chief Executive, and assuming overall responsibility for the HR function including development of a HR strategy, the successful candidate will be responsible for translating the strategy into an action plan and taking accountability for the delivery of the plan to meet the development needs of the organisation.  You will act as an HR consultant for the business, working with the Leadership team to identify the key HR needs for the business - developing effective systems and processes and tools to ensure that the HR process is robust, efficient and up-to-date.  This will include scoping out and implementing a robust recruitment process and PSL agreements with third party suppliers; developing retention strategies and a talent and succession framework; and developing and reviewing pay and benefits packages.

Additionally, managing a small team of HR staff, you will ensure the team can advise and support managers with disciplinary and grievance issues.  You will also support the management of organisational changes resulting in complex employee relations activities and draft and regularly review HR policies and procedures in line with legislation changes.  You will work closely with the leadership team to analyse and review performance across the organisation, and create and embed an ‘accountability culture’- coaching managers to handle day to day HR and people issues.

The ideal candidate will have an ability to analyse and read organisations quickly, be fully CIPD qualified, and have significant experience of working in a senior HR role to scope and implement a HR strategy within a similar organisation.  Experience of a healthcare environment is essential, as is experience of working with a Leadership team. Robust and resilient, with a high level of emotional intelligence, you should also possess Generalist HR experience across all functions i.e. Resourcing, ER, Development, Reward, and have experience of managing a team, previous experience of developing, implementing and maintaining performance review tools, talent management and succession planning processes and a proven ability to design and deliver comprehensive recruitment and retention strategies. 

Whilst being a demonstrable clear thinker and strategic, you will also be happy to roll your sleeves up and be operational.  Additionally, you must be able to demonstrate experience in developing internal brand and lessons learned from culture change programs, and possess excellent communication, influencing, conflict handling and relationship building skills.  You will also be a diplomatic, pragmatic, credible and trustworthy team player – working collaboratively and with confidence at all levels.
