A challenging and exciting HR Manager opportunity has arisen for a dynamic, experienced and qualified HR professional at Thorpe Underwood Estate, incorporating Queen Ethelburga’s Collegiate; situated between York and Harrogate, Queen Ethelburga’s is ranked as the North of England’s academically most successful, independent co-educational day and boarding school.
Set in over 100 acres of manicured country park in the Vale of York, their supporting Charitable Foundation maintains a range and quality of facilities few can equal, with over £80m invested in new resources in recent years including a new Sports Village and a refurbishment of boarding accommodation.
Many people contribute to the ongoing success of Thorpe Underwood Estate and Queen Ethelburga’s, with over 800 teaching and support staff, and 1700 pupils all playing a role in making it what it is today.

They now seek to appoint an experienced HR Manager to develop and provide outstanding HR provision and maintain the high standards of the Estate and the School. The successful candidate will be responsible for all HR processes and procedures throughout the company and provide generalist HR advice and support to a diverse employee and manager population across the business. Additionally, you will ensure that the business is fully compliant with Safer Recruitment and Regulation matters, and that the Single Central register is accurate and fully up to date, as well as having an overview of all employee relations and provide advice on any employment regulation updates, HR processes or staffing. The role will report to the CEO and will be responsible for managing and developing a team of three HR professionals.

The ideal candidate will be a commercially astute, CIPD Qualified and experienced HR Generalist, with extensive experience gained delivering an efficient and effective HR service in both a commercial and an educational setting ideally. You must have demonstrable experience of managing a significant range of HR issues, including grievance and disciplinary matters. Additionally, the successful candidate will have experience of autonomous working, of developing and implementing HR polices, and an understanding and application of employment law to policy development. You should also have experience of formulating and implementing new policies. You will be responsible for managing a team of three HR professionals, and so previous team management experience would be highly advantageous, as would knowledge of child protection / safeguarding, motivation to work with children and young people, and an ability to form and maintain appropriate relationships at all levels with both employees and pupils.
