Our Client:

Spencer Ogden have been engaged by ‘The Accord on Fire & Building Safety’ which is a historic agreement between the Global Unions Industrial, and UNI, and over two hundred of the world’s best known apparel Brands and Retailers, to identify a Chief Safety Inspector who will help to improve building and fire safety standards in the Bangladeshi textile and garment industries.

Responsibilities:

The Chief Safety Inspector will join the Accord at a time when more than 1500 covered factories have been inspected. Reporting to the Steering Committee; the successful candidate will be responsible for driving forward the completion of the safety remediation program at these factories. Additional responsibilities will include:

• Developing, supervising and monitoring performance of Bangladesh inspection staff
• Overseeing and managing all Bangladesh inspection operations and administration
• Leading an inspectorate capable of efficiently and professionally evaluating fire and electrical safety, structural safety, and worker safety
• Reporting findings of inspections to factory owners, Brands and the public as required by the agreement
• Supporting the Bangladesh government, employers, and trade unions to meet their respective mandates on factory safety and safety enforcement

Alongside the Accord’s Executive Director, this is the key hire for the agreement and is integral to the success of the initiative. It will be a demanding and highly rewarding position.



Requirements:

The selected candidate will:

• Be an individual of utmost integrity
• Have proven experience of establishing and leading a group of safety professionals in a challenging environment
• Have thorough knowledge and extensive practical experience of building and fire safety codes
• Have a high level of social and cultural sensitivity with knowledge of human and labour rights being highly beneficial
• Be degree educated in an engineering discipline such as civil, structural or fire engineering and have Professional Engineer / Chartered Engineer designation
• Be courageous and resilient
• Have extensive experience of working in developing countries
