JOB DESCRIPTION

Under the supervision of the Administrative Director, the Substance Abuse Counselor is responsible for providing initial individual assessment, treatment planning, counseling, and case management for clients referred for inpatient/outpatient alcohol/drug problems. Provides individual, group, conjoint, and family counseling as appropriate. Prepares and conducts educational lectures on chemical dependency and related subjects. Participates in other hospital committees and teams as appropriate. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum requirements (the following are minimal qualification necessary for entry into this classification)

Education:

Counselor I/II: High school diploma or equivalent required. Graduation from accredited program. Completes annual educational requirements.

Counselor II: Master’s Degree in the behavioral sciences and one year experience as a Substance Abuse Counselor or 1 year of practicum or internship in behavioral sciences.

License(s):

Counselor II: Licensure in specialty within 1 year of hire date.

Certification(s):

Counselor I/II: Current BLS for Healthcare Provider CPR or CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer certification within 90 days of hire.

Counselor I: Certified Alaska Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor by Certification Review Board as an Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Level I – Counselor.

Counselor II: Certified Alaska Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counselor by Certification Review Board as an Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselor preferred.

Experience(s):

Counselor I: Minimum two (2) years’ experience as a behavioral health counselor, substance abuse treatment counseling preferred. Completion of post high school behavioral health education can substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Counselor II: Minimum two (2) years’ experience as a behavioral health counselor, substance abuse treatment counseling preferred. Post bachelor’s degree work in behavioral health, including practicum and or internship my substitute for experience on a year for year basis.

Counselor I/II: Proven competency in specialty area. Communicates the mission, ethics, and goals of the facility.

Physical:
Light to moderate physical activity involving office procedures. Prolonged sitting with some walking throughout the facility. Manual dexterity for extensive keyboarding and telephone use. Infrequent light to moderate lifting. Emotional stress related to dealing with varied psychosocial needs of patients/families and occasional heavy workload.

Meets dress code standards; appearance is neat and clean. Wears identification while on duty. Complies with state and federal laws for employee health requirements, such as TB testing and other requirements (see Employee Health Policy for specific requirements). Hazardous Exposure/Working Conditions:

Exposed to hazards associated with electrical equipment. Minimal risk of exposure to hazardous materials, blood and body fluids, communicable diseases, violent behaviors, chemical elements. Work is carried out in office setting.
