Overall purpose of role

Part of Infrastructure Services, Middleware is the organization which runs, builds and maintains the Bank's Middleware IT infrastructure. The AVP role is for the Middleware aPaaS IT Infrastructure Engineer who is responsible for delivering middleware components within the Cloud infrastructure and providing support for middleware aPaaS self-service hosting platform, built on REDHAT’s OPENSHIFT.

This role provides exposure to leading edge software technology and underlying platforms operating mission critical services to the group.

Key Accountabilities

  • Provide live systems support, including monitoring, patching and fixing any issues.
  • Proactively monitor and deal with the incident queues, and provide analysis around any problems that arise from incident support. Deliver high quality incident resolution to Barclays’ standards, policies and procedures. Attend conference calls on high severity incidents.
  • Undertake root cause analysis to deliver resolution to problems and recurring faults
  • Collaborate with developers to ensure smooth migration to Cloud.
  • Involvement in BAU and project change activities, ensuring these are scheduled and resourced appropriately; and the correct level of technical information is available to ensure successful implementation.
  • Ongoing review and influence of internal processes, technical approaches and component-level build.

The design and engineering of new solutions

The team is operating a follow the sun support model, but there is an requirement to operate as part of an out of hours callout rota at the weekend and during the hours in the week that are not covered by office cover from 10pm-4am, delivering both planned change activity and resolving high severity incidents across the Middleware

Stakeholder Management and Leadership

  • Act as a Primary Point of Contact for aPaaS Senior Management, Build The Bank, Run The Bank and Engineering Teams.
  • Act as liaison with key stakeholders to drive through business change.
  • Escalate Product Risks and Issues to Team Manager and Service Owners
  • Ability to understand and influence high level technical design of middleware components.
  • Ability to understand, implement and influence security concepts and solutions of middleware components.
  • Decision-making and Problem Solving
  • Analytical ability covering incident recovery, root cause identification and eradication and pro-active service and process improvement
  • Understanding of the full project lifecycle and key quality gates with emphasis on validation and live implementation phases
  • Ability to understand and influence high level solution design and low level Middleware component designs.
  • Ability to track and enforce adherence to Middleware product standards and acceptance criteria
