Role Description
As a member of the Hit Discovery and Optimization(HDO) group in PDM-NCE (Pharmacokinetics, Dynamics & Metabolism-New Chemical Entity), the successful candidate will contribute to developing and applying cutting edge mass spectrometry-based analytical technologies and approaches to cellular biology and pharmacological profiling to support the needs of the Research Units. Additionally, the successful candidate will work to establish these capabilities on a WRD-wide scale as a platform. The successful candidate will create and foster effective relationships with internal project teams, colleagues in complementary groups, junior colleagues and external partners. The candidate will additionally take a lead as a scientific expert in analytical fields with relevance to cellular biology and pharmacology and will help to create and maintain a strategy in this space along with helping to develop colleagues to become proficient in these cutting edge technologies and approaches.

Responsibilities
The successful candidate will help to establish analytical abilities to profiling cellular biology and pharmacology within the HDO group. A strong fundamental understanding of biology, analytical technologies and approaches, proteomics and metabolomics and an ability to practically apply this knowledge will be critically required for this position. These skills and expertise will be needed for specific project team support needs and creation of enterprise-wide platform approaches. The candidate will be required to demonstrate scientific leadership as exhibited by helping to form a strategy for the future in this space, contribution to the internal and external community of practice, and in mentoring colleagues to develop these skills. For each of these duties, an ability to effectively partner and lead across different groups and levels is key.

In addition to helping build and guide the creation of the science and approaches in this space, the candidate’s individual contributions will include working with solute transporter and serine hydrolase gene families through development of analytical approaches and techniques to design assays aimed at characterizing key biological endpoints along with the creation of precise methods development for these analytes. Specifically, it is expected that the candidate will work closely with project teams and HDLP counterparts to devise experimental approaches to profiling pharmacology including Hit ID and HTS, structure-activity relationships, and engaging in profiling the mechanism of action. These efforts will further enable and ultimately inform modeling efforts and potential biomarkers approaches. The candidate will also play a direct role in performing proteomics approaches aimed at enabling phenotypic project strategies.

The candidate will certainly influence junior colleagues and may directly supervise up to one individual. There will be a need for the candidate to enable external vendors to progress Pfizer’ strategic paradigms in early discovery outsourcing space.

Successful candidates will be expected to:
• As an expert in analytical technologies, design Mass Spec. based screening strategies and mechanism of action studies in support of projects at various stages: Exploratory-to-Clinical Candidate programs

• Serve as a resource for technical and drug discovery expertise

• Proactively respond to project team needs for special studies to answer specific questions.

• Demonstrate expertise in Mass Spec, bioanalytical technologies and methods development

• Support collaborative initiatives as appropriate to secure intellectual property and/or quality publications.

• Maintain a ‘cutting edge’ awareness of technical developments and scientific knowledge and apply these where possible to improve performance.

• Adopt a Continuous Improvement mindset to improve quality, efficiency and/or cost of processes within lab, and/or with customers.

• Mentor junior colleagues

• Be proficient in computer software

• Demonstrate strong computer skills for automated data acquisition and analysis

• Possess excellent writing and communication skills

• Troubleshoot laboratory instruments and assays

• Maintain up to date electronic laboratory notebook and records as required by Pfizer policy.

• Comply with all safety training and good laboratory practices.

Qualifications
Training & Education:
• Educational Requirements: Minimum requirement is Ph.D. with formal training and skills in biological methods development, proteomics and / or metabolomics approaches along with a deep understanding of commensurate analytical technologies.

• Desired is 1-2 years of industry experience / post-doc experience applying these skills and technologies in practice in a drug discovery environment. Direct experiences with solute transporters, serine hydrolases or proteomics approaches to deconvolution are highly desired.

Prior Experience:
• Formal training in analytical sciences with experience in profiling cellular biology including specific physiologic analyte / biomarker assay development, and proteomic and metabolomics approaches is critical.

• Deep understanding and practical ability to utilize cutting edge analytical technology is critical.

• Experience working as a member of multidisciplinary teams in a matrixed environment and ability to lead without authority is highly desired.

• Experience with solute transporters and serine hydrolases is highly desired.

• Experience working within a drug discovery environment is highly desired.

• Supervision or mentorship of junior colleagues is highly desired.

• A strong publication / external presentation record and visibility is highly desired.

• An ability to create effective scientific proposals is highly desired.

• Experience with transitioning assays and work is highly desired.

• Demonstration of excellent computer, verbal and written communication skills.

• Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot technical assays and protocols.

• Experience in creating scientific and business relationships is desirable.
