The Senior Director, Software Engineering typically has leadership responsibility over groups/functional disciplines and/or a large products/platforms that significantly impacts other business units or leadership responsibility over a far reaching functional area. This typically includes responsibility for an offshore functional group. Develops, modifies and executes policies that have companywide impact. May have responsibility for global enterprise projects. Champions business/operational initiatives and leads change efforts that cross groups/business units. Implements strategic policies when selecting methods, techniques, and evaluation criteria for obtaining long-term results. Works with executive level management to ensure plans are integrated with broader corporate and/or functional strategies, budgets, schedules and plans. Influences internal leadership on decisions relating to critical priorities and schedules. Has regular contact with senior/executive level management inside and outside the company; contacts involve clarification or modification of projects, plans, operational decisions, and/or scheduling requirements.

Essential Functions/Responsibilities

Functional/Organizational Management :
  • Strategically plan and manage functional groups with multiple technical disciplines to architect and design enterprise software products/operating systems. Coach, train and mentor staff, providing opportunities for employee development and succession planning. Encourage, support, lead and develop team building within group/site/business unit. Has full performance management responsibilities including creating high level goals and working with staff to develop more specific goals and objectives for subordinates. Delegate broad goals and objectives to subordinate management team. Staff is typically in multiple locations, domestic and international. Influence decisions made by other departments/functional groups such as hiring/staffing decisions, global enterprise projects, etc. Partner with Finance; accountable for offshore budgets, staffing, capital expenditures.
Offshore Involvement :
  • Drive decisions made in offshore groups involving budgets, staffing, capital expenditures. Coordinate efforts between groups/functional units.

Process & Delivery Management :
  • Responsible for a cost center, expense management/accountability and ensuring that overall budgets meet corporate requirements. Create budget, make decisions around capital expenditures, accountable for department spending. Plan and authorize large and long term projects/initiatives that have broad business impact and may involve negotiations with outside vendors. Has overall control of strategic planning, staffing, budgeting, managing expense priorities, and recommending and implementing changes to methods. Make final decisions on administrative or operational matters and ensure operation's effective achievement of objectives. Regularly interact with executives and/or major customers. Present technology roadmaps to senior management, often persuading and negotiating for resources. Partner with Product Management to define, build and deliver products to market. Manage customer relationships and resolve high level issues/problems.

Technology Management & Development :
  • Apply advanced technical expertise and leadership to drive the medium to long term strategic technical direction of the functional group. Decisions impact multiple groups/functional areas and product direction. Work with peers such as Product Line Management to create broad delivery strategies and strategic objectives. Responsible for the software engineering process and knowledge capture for broad and far reaching area of responsibility and makes technical recommendations to senior management that has far reaching impact. Work with the ETS organization to develop infrastructure, enterprise tools, and enterprise technology strategies. Work with Legal on patent considerations. Host technology summits and work with other organizations to drive, develop, and implement technology best practices, aligning and coordinating processes and strategies. Will likely manage relationships with medium to large vendors.


JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in a software engineering discipline strongly preferred
  • Master's Degree or MBA is a plus

Experience
  • Ten years of experience in an applicable software development environment
  • Eight years of progressive management/leadership experience

Knowledge/Skills
  • Negotiation skills to influence strategic issues requiring coordination across functional/business unit lines or influencing senior leaders regarding matters of significance to the organization
  • Expertise in project management, with solid understanding of managing milestones, deliverables and resource scheduling for multiple, highly visible, long term and complex projects
