Mechanical Engineer - Materials Handling

Our dynamic and growing Vancouver office of an employee owned, multi-discipline engineering firm urgently requires a talented and enquiring minded individual to work as a Materials Handling Engineer in our dynamic and growing Ports group within the Vancouver office. As a Mechanical Engineer with the Ports Practice you will be involved in materials handling for marine facilities

The successful engineer will have specific design experience related to the Materials Handling equipment for ports and marine terminals, including:

  • Planning and design of Materials Handling aspects such as:
    • Truck and railcar unloading systems;
    • Stockyard layout;
    • Stackers and Reclaimers;
    • Conveyors;
    • Shiploaders and Ship Unloaders;
  • Development of functional, conceptual, preliminary and detailed designs;
  • Coordinating the compilation of drawings with other technical staff and completing drawing reviews as required;
  • Preparing technical specifications for material procurement and installation;
  • Reviewing project documents prior to issue to check technical compliance and accurate presentation;
  • Preparing engineering reports and other technical documents such as proposal and contract documents;
  • Coordination with other engineering and related disciplines to produce engineering deliverables;
  • Interfacing with clients and with other engineering and specialist disciplines as required;
  • Lead and supervise multi-discipline teams (including sub-consultants) through all project phases of port and marine projects (planning, feasibility studies, detailed design and construction supervision/management).

Skills and qualifications required for this role include:

  • Undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering or Engineering Physics from an accredited university
  • Specialized post graduate training or qualification in Materials Handling Systems or related field will be a definite asset
  • 5 to 10 years or more of related engineering experience in Ports and Marine Terminal related projects, with specific experience in Materials Handling elements
  • Registration as a professional engineer, or engineer-in-training with APEGBC, or be eligible for registration with APEGBC
  • Good written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Working experience within multi-disciplinary projects and teams
  • Site experience is a definite asset either in construction or at an operating terminal
