Apprentice Sea Fishing Deckhands

Apprentice Sea Fishing Deckhands (APP0161B) Portsmouth, England

Salary: GBP0 - GBP450 per week + Apprenticeship Training
HTP Training is currently recruiting for Trainee level Apprentice Sea Fishing Deckhands.

If you are interested in starting a professional career within Sea Fishing then this is an excellent opportunity to kick start your career.

You don’t need to have any previous experience of working in the Fishing Industry or as a Fishing Vessel Deckhand as full training and support is provided by an employer and expert Apprenticeship Training provision.

The role

This role is initially a Traineeship opportunity where you will attend a mandatory 5 day Maritime and Coastguard (MCA) approved, basic safety training course in fire fighting, first aid, health and safety procedures and sea survival.

You will not be paid whilst on the 5 day training course but accommodation is provided. You will however be paid a minimum of £100 for your first period of work experience. Bonuses may also be paid based on your individual performance.

On successful completion of the Traineeship and basic safety training then candidates will be able to complete a fully paid Apprenticeship in Maritime Occupations.

This role will involve periods of time away at sea and you could be travelling on vessels anywhere from the South West, South Coast or Kent including Brixham, Weymouth and Portsmouth.

Work will include:

- Putting out nets to catch fish
- Using gear such as winches to bring the full nets back on board
- Sorting and gutting fish, storing them in ice and unloading them at the end of the trip
- Mending and maintaining nets and other fishing gear
- Keeping watch on deck and steering the boat
- Cleaning the boat and washing the deck
- Cooking for the crew or helping out in the engine room
- Using radio transmitters and navigating equipment
- Following health and safety rules for work at sea

Conditions

- You will live on the boat with other crew members, where conditions can sometimes be cramped
- You may be away from home for several days or weeks at a time
- You have to work on deck in all weathers including storms, gales and icy conditions, which can be dangerous
- You would have to do a lot of lifting, carrying and climbing

Key Criteria

- A good general education is useful
- You must be fit and healthy and have a lot of stamina as there is a lot of lifting, hauling and carrying
- You should also have good hearing and eyesight to work safely on the boat in all weather
- You should be good with your hands

- Responsible
- Able to work well as part of a close team
- Able to follow instructions and safety procedures
- Quick to react in an emergency
- Willing to work away from home away at sea, possibly for long periods in the future

You need to have:

- Good communication skills
- Good balance, weather may make the sea choppy and this can be difficult when working on a boat
- Good fitness and stamina as there is a lot of lifting, hauling and carrying on board
- Good hearing and eyesight to work safely on the boat in all weather

Training

Before going to sea, you must attend a 5 day Maritime and Coastguard (MCA) approved, basic safety training course in fire fighting, first aid, health and safety procedures and sea survival. This will take place in January in Cowes on the Isle of Wight with accommodation provided.

Progression

- With experience, you may be able to move up to work as ship's mate or skipper
- You may go on to undertake a full Apprenticeship in Maritime Occupations
- You may develop an interest in the maintenance and repair of fishing vessel's engines and go on to specialise in marine engineering

Pay

You won’t receive payment for the Basic Safety Awareness course, however you will be paid a minimum of £100 for your first period of work experience. Bonuses may be paid based on your individual performance.

Location: You will be leaving from different ports including Brixham, Weymouth and Portsmouth and surrounding areas

Hours: Varied. Once working then you could be away from home for up to a maximum of 8 days at a time when working on a ship.

Salary: Minimum 6 week unpaid Traineeship to start with whilst undertaking pre-employment training. Once employed wages could be in the region of £450 per week. In this line of work bonuses are available depending on catch sizes and the discretion of the Skipper of the boat.
