This exciting and rewarding vacancy is for a market-leading, national provider of supported living to vulnerable young people aged 16-21. The organisation was formed in 2006 by a group of social workers who wanted to provide alternative and individual accommodation options and support services for high risk, vulnerable young people who were leaving the care system.

Many young people leaving the care system have often, during childhood been subject to abuse, neglect and other mistreatment amongst a multitude of other problems. This can lead to personal and behavioural difficulties. It is essential that young people leaving the care system are supported to make the transition from child to adulthood and can seek guidance, advice and assistance as they take steps towards living independently.

As a Community Youth Worker, you will empower them to overcome their personal battles and challenges and provide a source of guidance, mentorship and inspiration that encourages each individual to be the best that they can be. This will include support in all areas of their daily life including: budgeting and money management, maintaining their own accommodation, preparing meals together, attending medical and dental appointments, pursuing employment and education opportunities and working with external agencies such as CAMHS to ensure that the young person's needs are being met.

Are you?

  • a good communicator?
  • calm under pressure?
  • comfortable with lone working?

Do you?

  • have a passion for supporting young people at risk?
  • have experience in Mental Health or Learning Disability?
  • have an NVQ or equivalent in Health & Social Care?
  • have your own transport?

Essential Information

This is a regional role (not based in just one location) of which the expectation is that you will be mobile and able to work across several different services in the Bristol & South Gloucestershire region. This means you MUST have your own car and also you MUST add business insurance to your existing policy in order to be able to transport the young person you are supporting in your own car. The cost of adding business insurance to an existing policy is to be met by the applicant. The cost of business mileage will be reimbursed through an expenses process and is paid at 25p per mile.

The role of Community Youth Worker is not a 9-5 and you will be expected to work on weekends and bank holidays on a rota basis along with taking part in on call. Typical shift patterns are long, 24 hours in duration with an overnight stay, so for example Tuesday 10am-11pm Sleep, Wednesday 7am-10am. The benefits of this are that you cover your contracted hours over a shorter total number of days which means more days off.
