Competitive Salary Dependent Upon Experience - £65,000 - £100,000.


Are you a natural leader, commercially minded and interested in manging a team of specialist scientists, engineer and technicians? If so my client a world leader in advanced materials development and production are looking to appoint a Leader for their Centre of Excellence, where they will manage a team of specialist scientists, engineers and technicians


The successful candidate will take overall responsibility for the development and performance of the COE, developing the team into world leaders, adding significant credibility to the function both internally and externally with customers, leading research institutes and higher education facilities. You will be required to provide extremely strong technology leadership for the Primary Materials Centre of Excellence for Structural Ceramics.


Requirements of the COE Leader -


· To provide strategic direction and inspire and drive the ceramics business to be "global leaders in structural materials"
· Using the input from Regional Technical Directors, Regional Leadership Groups, Site Management Teams, and Customers to synthesise a coherent strategy and create Technology Road maps for structural ceramics
· Bring forward R&D proposals to support the short, medium, and long-term prosperity of the business
· To benchmark and define the important material characteristics in line with current customer needs and market strategy, controlling the material improvement projects to achieve this goal
· To develop a culture of creativity and innovation at all levels of the business unit
· Establish the organisations medium to long-term technical direction along with the GMs, Directors and additional stakeholders.
· Develop the technical COE function and ensure the objectives of the organisation and company growth schedules are met through continual development of the function and its role in the organisation.
· To provide technical direction and work with customers and partners to deliver leading edge solutions
· To manage the process of taking products from concept to manufacture ensuring engineering best practice is observed and costs controlled, and at all times work with a commercial thought process ensuring that the right decisions are made to ensure profitable growth for the future (We genuinely want a blue sky thinker, but require an individual to tailor their ideas to be commercially viable)
· To help build strategic alliances with partners on a global scale, partnering with the worlds leaders to ensure Morgan is at the forefront of technology.
· To take responsibility for the effective management of the CoE and ensure its place in the group is deemed to be of paramount importance to the future of the business, by ensuring it is fit for purpose and continues to develop world leading technology.

Main Duties

· To oversee the entire technical/engineering activity within the CoE, working strategically with the senior management team to analyse future market trends ensuring that the company's products are best placed to capitalise on these opportunities.
· Take responsibility for delivering various projects to pre-defined time scales and budgets whilst complying to demanding levels of quality.
· Provide the drive to ensure that the company's design capabilities are enhanced and seen to be a market leader.
· To develop relationships with the technical leaders on sites around the globe.
· To oversee and control the preparation of annual budgets and strategy plans for the CoEs technical/engineering function..
· To develop strong working relations with the manufacturing function (Engineering/Manufacturing) in order to obtain a common goal (Design for manufacture etc).
· To effectively promote the company as a leading competitive player in the technical/engineering and design technology to the overall market.
· To organise the work plans, set the deadlines and organise reviews for the technical/engineering teams with the CoE.
· To strategically review the competitors in the market and analyse their products in relation to your own, suggesting changes and other areas of opportunity.

Management Responsibilities.

· Establish objectives and procedures governing the performance of assigned activities.
· Provide annual objectives for the function and review objectives on an ongoing basis.

· To select and maintain the highest calibre personnel in all functions within the boundaries of their control.
· To be a lead player in the strategic direction of the business as a whole working closely with the senior management team to align the business with the marketplace
· Provide a budget and revise budget proposals received from direct reports, submit a budget for the CoE in accordance with the budget procedure.
· Ensure that the resources of the CoE function are working to the highest levels of efficiency and using forward thinking time management principals.
· Provide accurate reports to be submitted at board meetings providing other senior members of the company with the information they require to develop their own functions in accordance with the projected sales growth.


Education and Experience.

· Experience within a similar industry.
· Technical degree (preferably ceramics), a PHD is highly preferred.
· European or Global technical experience is a necessity (global client interaction).
· Proven ability to motivate personnel in order to gain and maintain a high level of drive.
· Management ability of the highest order.
